Candice shook her head. “Don’t blame yourself. It’s not your fault,” she said, pushing herself up with her hands. She then briefly recounted the events of the previous night, including Milton urging her to have an abortion and her suspicion that Erica had pushed her down the stairs from behind.
Bettina was utterly stunned, her mouth forming a perfect “O” shape, unable to close it. She had never imagined things would turn out to be so dramatic.
The person who had hurt Candice in the end was not from the Harman family, but Milton’s mother, whom Bettina had supported for a long time.
“I’m sorry, Betty. I never told you about my pregnancy. It’s not that I didn’t want to tell you, but I hadn’t decided what to do in the future,” Candice said, staring at the ceiling with empty eyes. She sighed, knowing she didn’t have to think about it anymore. The child was gone forever.
“How is that possible? Candice, are you sure Erica pushed you down the stairs and caused your miscarriage? But why would she do that? Did she think you were pregnant with Greyson’s child? But it doesn’t make sense. Even if she didn’t want you to marry into the Lopez family, why would she want you to have a miscarriage?” Bettina asked, bewildered.
Bettina, who worked in law, couldn’t make sense of the situation. She couldn’t find logic in what had happened.
“Candy, let me get the surveillance video for you. We have to find out the truth. If it turns out that Milton’s mother really did push you down the stairs, what are you going to do? Call the police?” Bettina asked tentatively.
Candice hesitated for a moment before responding, “I can’t be certain without evidence, but I suspect it was her since there was no one else around. Naturally, I did not witness it firsthand, and therefore, I refrain from drawing a conclusion without concrete evidence.”
After a pause, Candice continued, “Regardless of the truth, I don’t want to hold her accountable. I just want to move on and have nothing to do with him ever again.”
Bettina knew all too well that Candice was referring to Milton. She held her friend’s trembling hands tightly, feeling the sweat coating her palms.

Candice closed her eyes, overwhelmed by a deep sadness that threatened to consume her.
Unable to control her emotions any longer, tears began to fall freely. In front of Bettina, she allowed herself to be vulnerable, wanting to grieve as much as she needed, regardless of anything else.
Bettina hugged her tightly, fully aware that although Candice appeared strong on the outside, she was incredibly sensitive. The wounds and traumas Candice had endured had never truly healed.
“It’s alright. If you’re sad, just cry. You don’t have to hold it in,” Bettina whispered softly, gently patting Candice’s back to help her release her emotions.
Candice sobbed uncontrollably, her pain filling the VIP ward with a heavy sadness.
After what felt like an eternity, she calmed down and rested her head on Bettina’s shoulder, her breathing still slightly labored.
“Betty,” Candice started slowly, her voice barely above a whisper, “will you think less of me? I… I think I may have fallen in love with him.”
