Chapter 17:
Raul nudged Milton with his elbow.
He lowered his voice and said, “Geez, I thought you’d never realize it. It’s her. It’s her.”
Candice raised her wrist and looked at her watch.
Then she faced Raul again, her eyes bright. “Email me the information about the case. I’ll study it carefully and decide whether to take it or not. If…” She trailed off.
“If your company is in the wrong, then there will be nothing I can do to help, and we don’t have to waste each other’s time.”
Embarrassed, Raul tried to ease the tension. “I apologize for the misunderstanding here…”
“There’s been no misunderstanding. Everything has been crystal clear to me.”
After casting a glance at Milton, Candice curled her lips into a smug smile and remarked, “No wonder somebody sued your company for human rights violations. I can see why now.”
Hearing that, Milton was stunned.
Embarrassment flashed across his handsome, arrogant face.
What did this woman mean? Was she implying he didn’t care about human rights? And that was why his company was involved in a human rights lawsuit overseas?
Was she serious?
As he was about to say something, Raul stopped him.
Raul started sheepishly, “Thank you, Candy. We will send you the case files right away. Our company’s not in the wrong. We didn’t violate anyone’s rights. We’re the victim here.”
“I guess we’ll see about that. Have a good day, Mr. Hinks and Mr. Lopez. I’ll be waiting for those case files and will let you know my decision once I’ve gone over them.”
After that, Candice turned and started to leave. But after two steps, she turned right back around and faced Milton once again.
She was still angry about what had just happened and needed to give Milton a piece of her mind.

She considered keeping her cool and letting things slide, but she couldn’t.
“Mr. Lopez, you are indeed a very handsome man. But that doesn’t mean the entire world revolves around you. And—”
for your information, you’re not my type either. Let me give you a piece of advice: go see a shrink and get your narcissistic personality disorder under control. The sooner you seek treatment, the better.”
Milton could only stare at the woman in front of him with wide eyes.
After Candice left, Raul burst into laughter.
He didn’t care that he looked like a guffawing fool in front of everyone at the Royal Garden Corporation.
“Oh, man, you’re killing me. You’ve been really unlucky lately. I can’t… First, you lost your twenty-eight-year-old virginity. And now Candy just told you to your face that you’re a narcissistic pretty boy.”
He struggled to catch his breath and added, “I think it’s nice of her to care about your mental health. Oh, man…”
As Raul busted his gut, Milton’s face darkened. He was already on the verge of snapping.
Raul continued laughing so hard that he felt like he pulled a muscle. “I’m sorry. I really can’t help it. She said you’re not her type. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine anyone telling you that. You are indeed narcissistic. Maybe she’s right about you needing to see a shrink.”
“Are you done?”
These words came through Milton’s clenched teeth.
“Okay. Fine. I’m done.”
Raul finally stopped laughing. He stood straight and schooled his features into neutrality. “What do you reckon we should do now? You just offended Candy like I told you not to. You have to do something to win her favor.”
“Can’t we just hire another lawyer?” Milton retorted, rolling his eyes. Why should he do anything to win anyone’s favor?
“Weren’t you listening to my explanation earlier? Candy’s our best shot at winning this case. She’s the best human rights lawyer this side of the world. For Pete’s sake, she earned her master’s degree and doctorate in law at Hoffer University and passed the bar exam at a very young age and on her first try. She’s one of—”
Hoffer University’s most distinguished alumna, and she earned her degrees with very little face time at school because her dissertation was so outstanding.”
By the time Raul finished reciting Tina’s resume, he was out of breath.
Milton narrowed his eyes in response. Looking in the direction Tina had gone, he thought for a moment.
That wasn’t the point.
Why did she suddenly feel familiar to him, even with her back turned?
