Chapter 427

Chapter 427:
Upon seeing Bettina, Candice turned her face away, avoiding the spoon Greyson offered. These new concerns meant nothing to her. She was already disillusioned.
“Please leave. I want to be alone with Betty,” she said icily.
Greyson gasped for breath. What he was doing now was something he never could have done before, but she remained unmoved. His hand froze mid-air, awkwardly hanging there before he finally lowered it with a displeased expression.
Bettina stepped forward, took the bowl and spoon from Greyson, and shot him a cold glance.
“Let me do it, Mr. Harman. Thank you for taking care of her.” The irony in calling him Mr. Harman was not lost on anyone present.
Greyson’s frown deepened as he stood to leave. “She’s in pain from uterine contractions. She just took demerol, which will take effect soon. Let her eat something so her empty stomach doesn’t make her sick,” he explained.
Bettina nodded and fed Candice a mouthful of porridge.
Candice didn’t refuse and swallowed silently.
Seeing Candice finally willing to eat, Greyson felt relieved. “I’ll be leaving now. Don’t hesitate to call if you need me,” he said, turning to leave and giving Candice some peace.
As Greyson exited the room, Bettina couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong with him? Why is there a scratch on his face? Did Madilyn do that?” She noticed the wound on Greyson’s cheek, which he had treated with ointment.
Candice nodded weakly, too exhausted to speak.
Bettina continued feeding Candice, encouraging her to nod or shake her head if she felt uncomfortable. “When you feel stronger, you can talk to me,” she offered.
Candice nodded again.
After finishing her bowl of porridge, the effects of the demerol began to set in. Her pain eased significantly, but she experienced slight dizziness and physical weakness—likely side effects of the medication.

Having cared for Candice for a while, Bettina tidied up the dishes and sat beside her, a look of disdain crossing her face.
She muttered to herself, “It’s a shame. Greyson has a handsome face, but Madilyn ruined it. Though I suppose he deserved it. Fortunately, as a doctor, he knows how to treat himself. Maybe there won’t be a lasting scar. He’s learned a lesson. Not a great loss, really. But wait… look.”
Something seemed to dawn on Bettina, and she turned to Candice. “Wait a minute. Madilyn tried to scratch you, right? And Greyson stepped in to protect you, didn’t he?”
Candice nodded weakly, gathering a bit of strength. “Yes, that’s right,” she whispered.
“Bitch! That despicable woman!” Bettina spat. “Greyson’s finally got a conscience and realized he should bear it alone. Candy, are you feeling any better? Can you tell me what happened?”
Bettina took Candice’s hand, tears of apology welling in her eyes. “I’m so sorry. It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t left last night, you wouldn’t be in this situation. I should have stayed with you,” she said.
