She quickly called Bettina for help.
“Hey, Betty. Can you please ask your brother to send me the lease contract for the apartment? I need it right now.”
“Here’s the thing, I forgot my new password and need someone to open the door for me. I’ll be waiting for your call.”
Candice ended the call and anxiously waited for Bettina’s response.
Meanwhile, Milton had already unlocked the door to Raul’s apartment. He stood there, holding the door open for Candice, and gestured for her to come in.
“Come on in and wait.”
Candice hesitated, leaning against the wall, and shook her head. “No, thanks.”
She didn’t want to enter. Being alone with Milton in the apartment didn’t feel like a good idea.
Milton opened his mouth to say something, but just then, her phone rang.
It was Bettina. Candice answered it quickly.
“Hey, Betty. Did you send the contract to my email?”
Bettina’s response was not what Candice had hoped for.
“No, I’m sorry. I couldn’t reach my brother. He’s on a business trip abroad, and his phone is off. I left him a message, but he won’t be able to send the contract until tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. our time.”
Candice was flustered. “What? So I have to wait until tomorrow morning? I can’t go home tonight? What should I do?” she exclaimed.
Bettina cut to the chase. “No worries. Just stay with you-know-who. He lives in your apartment, and you live in his. Same-same, right? Bye. Catch you tomorrow.”
Candice was stunned.

She was about to suggest staying at Bettina’s place for the night, but Bettina had already hung up.

Milton was able to roughly piece together what had happened and offered again, “Since you forgot the password, you can stay here tonight.”
Candice lifted her head, meeting his gaze. She couldn’t decipher his expression and grew uneasy.
Without thinking, Candice shook her head. “No, I’ll just stay in a hotel tonight.”
Milton raised an eyebrow, looking relaxed with his arms folded. “Got cash or a bank card with you?”
That morning, Candice had rushed to change and hurried out. She had her phone but no bag. Milton didn’t believe she had cash or a bank card with her.
Stunned, Candice checked her pockets. Sure enough, no cash. She had only planned to grab a quick lunch nearby, not play golf in the afternoon, and definitely not forget her apartment code.
Milton gestured toward Raul’s place and extended a third invitation.
“Let’s head in.”
