Milton pulled Candice into his arms, cast a cold glance at Bart, and started walking away.
Candice looked ahead at Bettina, who walked faster and faster until she disappeared around a corner. Then, Candice glanced back at Bart and saw that he had entered a private room. When the door swung open, she caught a glimpse of who was inside.
Candice couldn’t believe her eyes. Was that Benson in the room Bart entered? Benson had worked in the Blake Group’s department of research and development. He had participated in the low-priced acquisition of the Blake Group with Grady, reorganized the company after it went bankrupt, and established the Centilength Biotech Corporation.
What was Benson doing with Bart? What did they have to do with each other? Or had she seen it wrong? After all, she had only seen photos of Benson. She had never met him in person. Candice shook her head, hoping her questions would just fall off like rotten fruit. Maybe she was just overthinking it.
When Candice and Milton entered their private room, they found Bettina sitting by the window.
After hesitating for a while, Candice asked, “Betty, would you like to eat somewhere else?”
Bettina looked up at her, her expression calm. She snickered and replied, “Don’t be ridiculous. This place is fine. It’s just my ex-boyfriend. We don’t have to make a big deal out of him. Besides, we’re in a private room. I don’t have to look at him while I eat. I mean, we’ve all been in bad relationships, right? We just have to move on from them.”
Candice flashed Bettina a worried look.
She had known Bettina long enough to know when she was telling half a lie.
She could tell that Bettina truly cared about Bart. Though Bettina kept preaching about moving on, Candice knew her best friend understood that it was easier said than done. Candice had told Bettina everything about Greyson, including what happened in the cold storage, but Bettina never once mentioned Bart or even said his name. If they hadn’t run into Bart today, Candice might have believed that Bettina’s mysterious ex-boyfriend was nothing but a story. She had no idea what had happened between Bettina and Bart.
“Mr. Lopez, if you don’t mind, I’m going to order using the electronic menu,” Bettina said, waving her phone at Milton.
“All right,” Milton replied, choosing not to ask any questions.

After ordering, Bettina casually looked up and asked Milton, “So Bart is your cousin, Mr. Lopez? What happened between you two? You don’t seem to get along well.”
Milton arched his eyebrows and answered, “He’s my aunt’s second son. The Royal Garden Corporation has a marriage alliance with Universe Financial Group, but Bart and I don’t have much contact.”
“The Universe Financial Group?” Bettina asked, surprised. “Then how is Healy related to Bart?”
“You don’t know that Healy is Bart’s younger brother?” Milton asked, confused. How could Bettina not know, especially if she and Bart had dated for a while?
