Chapter 461

Chapter 461:
“Mr. Lopez…” Candice called softly.
Milton looked at her in shock. Why was she addressing him so formally? And why was she being so distant? Milton felt suffocated.
Feelings of rage surged inside Milton as he suddenly pulled Candice closer. She was so near she could feel the warmth of his breath on her cheek.
“How did you just address me? What gives you the nerve to call me that? If you keep calling me that, I’ll have to kiss you until you can’t help but stop!” While Milton could tolerate her accusations, hatred, beatings, and scolding, he couldn’t stand it when she deliberately distanced herself from him.
Candice’s eyes flashed. A whole month had passed before she could finally face him.
But she still had to calm herself, realizing how close he was.
She avoided giving him a direct answer.
Perhaps she was afraid of upsetting him. He had already kissed her in court once. She didn’t want to relive that moment.
He clasped his hands around her slim waist and drew her closer. Her waist was now slimmer than before.
“Why?” he asked.
Candice knew he was asking why she decided to withdraw the court case.
She said softly, “It’s simply because you once saved me. That night, while we ate at a roadside food stall, you casually said you saw a group of gangsters punch and kick a woman with a black sack over her head in the south of the city.”
The news stunned Milton for a moment. Then he recalled she had inquired about the details at the time.
“Was… was that woman you?”
“Yes, it was. That happened the day after my wedding. Madilyn hired some criminals to have me killed. By chance, you passed by. I heard your footsteps and yelled for help. Thanks to you, Madilyn didn’t manage to kill me. From start to finish, you said nothing. The black sack covered my face, so I didn’t see you. You took out each of them. I only saw your back after I cut the ropes and removed the sack.”

Milton’s thin lips twitched. When he saved that woman that night, he had no idea it was Candice.
He had been surrounded by a mob of thugs and couldn’t escape until he took them down. He saved her but didn’t want her to see him. As soon as he saw her cutting the ropes, he left.
By chance, he had ended up helping Candice without knowing it until then.
She glanced at him and said, “I was mentally and physically drained at the time, completely helpless to resist, and desperate. You rescued me from the depths of hopelessness. When I found out, I wanted to dismiss the case as soon as possible.”
Hearing her words, Milton pursed his lips and remained silent.
It was true. Judge Fletcher had said the application to dismiss the case was prepared more than a month ago but wasn’t submitted until now.
