“Listen carefully, Candice. The Olson family is not as straightforward as you might think. I’m not privy to the details of the conversation you had with Paisley last night, nor do I know what she asked of you or what promises she made. I would advise against you accepting the Olson family’s case.”
She paused for a moment before continuing, “I say this not out of selfish reasons. It’s out of concern. The Olson family’s ties to the art world are intricate. And, you are just so young.”
Candice was taken aback by Erica’s words. Did she really just warn her against the Olson family? Wasn’t there a friendship between Erica and Paisley? Weren’t the Lopez and Olson families about to become in-laws?
Confusion gripped her. Where exactly did Erica stand when it came to the Olson family?
She replied, “I appreciate your caution, Mrs. Lopez. Rest assured, I won’t be taking on the Olson family’s case. I won’t be working for them either.”
Erica nodded in relief. “That’s comforting to hear.”
Candice, looking straight at Erica, suddenly said, “Mrs. Lopez, may I ask something? During the birthday party of the ambassador’s wife, I recall you mentioning that you felt somewhat dizzy and uncomfortable. Did anything or anyone at the party raise suspicion? Please, don’t misunderstand. My detailed analysis revealed a twenty-second gap in the surveillance footage of our meeting in front of the hotel. Hence, I suspect foul play.”
Initially, Erica’s brows furrowed when Candice brought up the ambassador’s wife’s birthday party. She assumed that Candice wanted to discuss her miscarriage. She was unsure of how to defend herself.
But to her surprise, Candice seemed to be on the path of uncovering something suspicious. It was an unexpected turn of events.
