Chapter 996
Chapter 1004:
“What? You are pissed off? You chose to be engaged to my sister of your own volition. No one coerced you into it. As for Candice, even if I don’t pursue her, there’ll be others lining up. Do you genuinely believe you can keep her by your side forever? Or are you planning to emulate my father and maintain multiple mistresses, fathering illegitimate children along the way?”
“I said shut up!” Milton’s eyes smoldered with rage, his nostrils flaring as he clenched his fists, ready to deliver another strike. But at the precipice of action, his fist inexplicably stopped short of Elmo’s face.
In truth, Elmo’s words had hit their mark. Could he indeed keep Candice by his side?
Elmo remained stationary, his gaze locked on Milton. Slowly, he extended his hand, gently moving the clenched fists that had been poised to strike.
“We’ve always been friends,” Elmo said, his tone unwavering. “Today, I’ll be candid with you. I have affection for Candice as well. In the interest of our friendship, as long as you’re not married, I’ll respect your claim. I promise not to cross that line. But once you’ve wed my sister, I’ll pursue her.”
Milton’s temples throbbed with anger, his jealousy driving him to the brink of madness. The mere thought of Candice in another man’s arms was almost unbearable. First it was Greyson, and now Elmo!
Milton turned away and leaned against his desk, chest heaving as he panted.
Elmo, this son of a bitch thought he hadn’t been infuriated enough today and wanted to provoke him to the point of madness!
Elmo rose to his feet and adjusted his suit. Glancing at Milton’s back, he said earnestly, “If you don’t want that, I advise you to think about it first. Maybe getting married a year or two after the engagement. You’re not in a rush. Take your time and think it over.”
As Elmo made his way to the door, he shook a contract in his hand. “Thank you for the project. See you another day.”

And with that, he exited Milton’s office, confident that Milton had heard and understood his unspoken words about Candice.
After Elmo left, Milton remained in a state of turmoil, engulfed by a sense of helplessness.
What could he do to save himself?
Candice had a deep-seated fear of being abandoned, and he had callously inflicted pain on her. The mere sight of her pained expression cut him like a knife.
Her family meant everything to her, yet he was responsible for the loss of her parents.
To spare her from further suffering in the future, he had to let her go. What he hadn’t expected, however, was that she refused to accept their parting.
Even though it was for their own good, he couldn’t bring himself to say harsh words to her.
