“Don’t speak for him. You have no idea how badly he has treated me.” Candice gave Bettina a side glance and rolled her eyes.
“How did he treat you?” Bettina asked incredulously. “He made you marry him?” Candice was speechless.
She couldn’t have been more right.
Bettina asked, “What’s so bad about him? Admittedly, I find his temper quite short. Still, all the ladies in the city should aspire to marry him.”
Candice squeezed Bettina’s arm and replied, “If you’re that attracted to him, you can marry him. Not that I have any desire to, anyway.”
Bettina shouted, “Hey, I’m driving! It’s dangerous.”
“But why?” Bettina just didn’t get it. She thought highly of Milton. In any case, he would be a better choice than Greyson.
“To begin with, he has an enormous fortune. He sees marriage as his greatest opportunity to form a lasting business partnership. Secondly…”
Candice paused briefly before continuing, “Everything he has done was to make me drop the case. I know that after he paid the hefty bail, he didn’t provide any evidence to the court.”
In her heart, she scoffed. Everything he had done to her in public, including pressuring her into a divorce, was just an elaborate plot to get her to drop the case.
Unless she dropped the case, nothing would be resolved. If he was unable to provide proof of a larger conspiracy explaining the events of that night, his theory would likely be dismissed.
Four months later, the court session would take place. He would surely face legal consequences.
The public was aware of the situation. He had a hard time keeping it hidden.
There was only one way for him to get away with it, and that was to convince her to drop the case on her own initiative.
With a sidelong look, Bettina remarked, “Is that what you—”
“No other reason comes to mind,” Candice said with a snort.

Bettina opened her mouth but said nothing.
She understood that Candice’s experience with romantic disappointment made it difficult for her to trust again. Bettina had little prior knowledge of Milton. She had thought that if she could get them together, Candice would forget about Greyson.
However, Candice had to save herself in the end.
Even if anyone else knew something, they couldn’t assist her.
Candice was so miserable that she struggled to catch her breath. She unscrewed a bottle of water and gulped it down.
Bettina let out a long sigh and added, “I heard that Greyson will purchase fifteen percent of the shares of Royal Ballet Troupe. They’ve already begun bargaining with one another. Are you aware of this?”
Candice was still drinking water. Before she could even try to stop, she began choking when she heard Bettina.
The news triggered a coughing fit she was unable to stop.
