Chapter 737
Chapter 737:
“It’s futile. Don’t expend your energy. We are far from where the gangster lay, rendering our pleas inaudible to the police. Let us wait here patiently. Someone will unlock this door tomorrow morning. The logistics crew typically begins their packing and delivery operations around four or five o’clock, with the trucks leaving the city by six. They won’t delay. So rest easy and get some sleep. I’m here with you.” Milton pulled her into a tight hug.
“Okay.” Candice nodded, her spirits lifted by Milton’s presence. With him by her side, she cared not for the length of their confinement. Even in the encompassing darkness, fear had long ceased to grip her.
Nestled within his embrace, she found solace and quickly succumbed to slumber once more.
Milton held her tenderly, closing his eyes as he embraced the tranquility of the moment.
Several hours slipped away. Suddenly, Milton’s ears caught a faint sound, the turning of the iron door handle.
Always a light sleeper, his eyes snapped open, alert to the long-awaited arrival.
Finally, someone had come.
Milton gently nudged Candice and whispered, “Time to wake up.”
Clinging to him like a vine, Candice mumbled, “No, I want more sleep.”
Milton, grinning, gave her nose a playful pinch to interrupt her breathing.
“Don’t you want to go outside?”
Candice, deprived of air, jolted awake.
Immediately, Milton released his grip on her nose.
Candice gasped deeply. As her awareness returned, she detected the grinding sound of the iron door being nudged open.
Milton assisted Candice to her feet. Darkness blanketed their surroundings and the outside, leading them to estimate that it was the wee hours of the morning.

The warehouse worker entered with a perplexed expression and exclaimed, “This is strange. I distinctly recall forgetting to close the door yesterday. Why is it closed? I hope nothing is missing. I should check…”
He was cut off mid-sentence as his eyes caught a dim figure near the door, too dark to discern.
Startled, he demanded, “Who’s there?”
Instinctively assuming it was a burglar, he shouted, “Thief! Help!”
Irritated by the noise, Milton abruptly smacked the back of the warehouse worker’s head.
The worker dropped to the ground instantaneously.
“He’s unconscious. What now?” Candice skirted past the slumbering warehouse worker and headed toward the iron gate.
Milton swung the iron door open wide and carefully dragged the unconscious warehouse worker out.
“Don’t worry. He’ll regain consciousness soon. We should leave.”
