Chapter 786
Chapter 786:
Candice was at a loss for words. Milton’s reprimand had her at a standstill, unable to conjure a single comeback.
Rupert stepped in, trying to alleviate the tension.
“Mr. Lopez, Miss Blake, I assure you both. I’ll relay Miss Blake’s perspective to higher-ups and pursue it further. We will handle this.”
But Milton brushed him off, resuming his lecture to Candice. “Don’t stick your nose in this. This is a job for law enforcement. They’ll take control of this situation. Who do you think you are? A legendary heroine? Are you aiming to save the world?”
Candice found herself tongue-tied once again. Milton was being rather intrusive.
“I’m not interfering. If we fail to remedy the root cause of this veteran’s crimes, his bitterness will persist, and he will seek vengeance on society again. After his release, it might not be me, but someone else bearing the consequences. Isn’t the law’s objective not just punitive but also educational and corrective?”
Truth be told, Candice didn’t want to engage in a dispute in front of Rupert over the phone. She was merely standing by what she believed to be right.
“You!” Milton erupted.
At this moment, Rupert chimed in, “I hadn’t completed my statement earlier. After Cathy employed the veteran, Miss Blake was assaulted. But later, Mr. Lopez incapacitated him in the logistics area. Subsequently, a logistics worker discovered him and alerted the police. After the veteran was escorted by the police, Cathy lingered around the supply area. Based on her confession, she intended to lead Miss Blake to an isolated spot, murder her, and discard her body. Observing the veteran being escorted by the police was not part of her plan, but she stayed in the supply area regardless, knowing there was only one way out, and without witnessing your departure, she was convinced you were hiding and waiting for daylight to…
She remained vigilant until, from a distance, she noticed you getting into the car. She then followed you. Her sole intention was to stage a car accident and perish with you. Upon further investigation, she appeared unaware that Mr. Lopez was also in the car—a detail she missed due to the darkness. So, her focus was entirely on you.”

Rupert rapidly laid out the facts, hoping to prevent any further arguments between Candice and Milton.
Candice responded after absorbing the information, her brows furrowing. “Understood. I appreciate the information. Mr. Griffin, I’ll leave the rest to you. Contact me if you require my assistance at any point.”
Rupert replied, “Sure. I’ve conveyed all I intended to. If anything comes up, we can stay in touch and contact each other again.” With that, Rupert ended the call.
Milton’s left fist was clenched, the blue veins on the back of his hand clearly visible. Rupert’s words might have sounded routine, but they left Milton with a wave of dread and fear. The thought of what could have happened had he not arrived in time was unthinkable.
Without warning, he drew Candice into his arms, ignoring the pain in his chest from the sudden movement.
He held her close, his lips brushing against her ear as he planted soft kisses and whispered in a trembling voice, “Promise me you won’t engage in any risky behavior in the future.”
