“In any case, follow me. Where did last night take you?” Bettina knew Candice had to assume a false identity to get into Watery Aroma but had no other details about the plan.
Initially, she was concerned about Candice’s late arrival that morning, but she was relieved to see her safe and sound.
Bettina pulled Candice into her office and shut the door behind them.
With a nod, Candice said, “It was a success. I did it!”
She checked the email she had left for Grady on her way there.
Since the hitmen Grady had hired were repelled by her, his concern for Candice’s possible retaliation had led him to respond quickly to her request from the previous night for information on Centilength Biotech’s products.
Candice forwarded the email to Bettina.
Bettina sighed as she opened it and said, “Some of this business data is beyond our capacity to investigate. Even I’m baffled by it. It seems we’ll still need Greyson’s help.”
The mention of Greyson reminded Candice of the time he had humiliated her with her diary. Her expression darkened.
She hadn’t made any effort to contact him recently and had even ignored his messages.
Yet, Greyson’s assistance was crucial for the Blake Group investigation.
Candice, in truth, was reluctant to ask him for help.
When Bettina saw the troubled look on Candice’s face, she suggested, “How about I ask my brother to introduce us to someone who understands research and development in biology?” She rubbed her chin thoughtfully and added, “Unfortunately, I can’t guarantee we can trust this person, since we don’t know them well enough. After all, you can’t just let anyone into your investigation.”
“Don’t bother,” Candice said, standing up. “I’ll go see Greyson soon. I need to write an appeal, Bettina. I have to be in my office.” It was more important to get to the bottom of the matter than to save face.
Candice was unmotivated to get any work done when she returned to her office. Her mind was scattered, and she felt restless. Last night, she had known there was something wrong with her. Her will to resist was weakening.
