He didn’t know why he bought it now—perhaps because he didn’t want their relationship to end like this. Candice had resolutely moved out of his apartment, leaving him feeling unusually flustered.
Greyson leaned back, raising his eyebrows. “You said you didn’t want the patent that night. I know you said it out of anger. I’ll forget that. Once the new drug hits the market, you’ll receive a lot, including your mother’s signature rights.”
Greyson believed Candice would be touched. After all, she had loved him for a decade.
Candice stared at the water drop-shaped ring in the blue velvet box. It was a beautiful custom design and must have cost a fortune.
She drifted in her thoughts.
In the past, she had yearned for such a wedding ring but never dared ask for it. She hoped Greyson would buy it for her, but he never did.
Candice was persistent and believed time would make him accept her eventually, as long as she kept pushing. She had proven her persistence for ten years. But now that she chose to give up, she would do so decisively and without hesitation.
With a faint smile, she pushed the velvet box back to Greyson. “It’s very beautiful. Thank you, but I can’t accept it.”
Greyson furrowed his brows, displeased. He hadn’t expected her to refuse.
At that moment, the waitress arrived with their dishes.
Two plates of steak and spaghetti, and a cup of mocha coffee. The waitress poured Greyson a glass of lemonade since he hadn’t ordered a drink.
With his handsome, calm demeanor, the waitress couldn’t help stealing a few extra glances at him. When she noticed the ring on the table, she looked at Candice with envy.
After the waitress left, Candice spoke before Greyson could ask.
“That day, I said I didn’t want the patent rights. Although it was impulsive, I thought it over and decided to move out.”

Greyson tightened his grip on his glass.
As Candice spoke, she began cutting her steak without looking up.
“Do you think I should be grateful if you marry me? Should I cherish your pity? Do you expect me to give you whatever you want just because I’ve loved you for ten years? Should I accept or even kneel down to thank you for your proposal?”
She paused and glanced at him.
“What do you think of me now? Unwilling to accept rejection? Or pity me?”
Greyson gritted his teeth and muttered a single word.
“Neither.”
But he couldn’t explain why he felt that way.
Angrily, Greyson placed the ring in front of Candice again. “I’ll give you another chance. Don’t let your anger cloud your judgment.”
Candice sneered. “Greyson, I’ve realized something. I’m still young. There’s no need to rush into marriage. I have my own career as a lawyer, and the Hope Law Firm is a partnership. I earn a 50% commission for each case, not to mention the year-end bonus. I can support myself, buy a house, and don’t need to rely on men—including you. So why should I get married?”
