Chapter 701
Chapter 701:
“It’s all your fault!” Bettina evaded the question. “Well, now you’re the popular one. Countless firms and individuals are queuing up for you to handle their legal affairs or become their legal advisor. Ever since you took that three-day break, I’ve been swamped handling them all.”
Candice, smiling, gave Bettina a friendly pat on the shoulder. “But you’re the business lead, and I don’t accept those cases. That’s your job. You ought to be pleased with the thriving business. Don’t blame me.”
Grabbing Candice’s arm, Bettina accused, “You must’ve handled the Warren Building Materials acquisition. So that’s the confidential case you were referring to.”
“Exactly,” Candice confirmed.
“You’re a real pro. You didn’t give away a thing. After Mr. Lopez overthrew Corless and bought out Warren Building Materials, he must’ve profited handsomely.” Bettina winked at Candice.
“Revealing it earlier would’ve complicated matters. Now that it’s sorted, I’ll head to the finance department to settle accounts and document this case.” Candice gave Bettina another glance. Bettina seemed better now. Had she merely been overwhelmed earlier?
“Candy, where is Milton? Are you still sharing a roof with him?” Bettina cautiously broached the topic.
Following a moment of silence, Candice responded, “He’s away on a business trip. He’s expected to return within a few days. I’m planning to ask him to move out once he’s back.”
Bettina chewed on her lower lip, uncertainty muffling her next words. Her ignorance about the past events had created this complicated situation, for which she blamed herself. She was at a loss, not knowing how to face Candice.
On the brink of articulating her thoughts, Bettina hesitated. She felt compelled to fix this mess herself and prevent Bart from causing further harm. Her fear was that if Candice discovered the truth, it might put her in a more precarious position.
“You seem like you’re holding something back,” Candice noted, a sense of confusion washing over her. “Betty, is everything okay? I feel like there’s something you’re keeping from me. You need to be honest today, or I can’t let you walk away.”

A shadow crossed Bettina’s face. She knew it was no easy task to deceive Candice. Then, an idea sparked in her mind. She quickly fabricated an alibi. “Actually, I’m dating someone. You’re acquainted with him too.”
Candice, taken aback, automatically inquired, “And who might that be?”
“Raul Hinks,” replied Bettina, believing this could divert Candice’s suspicions. She nervously ran her fingers through her cropped hair and added, “We’re living together. He keeps me up late every night, leading to sleepy mornings.”
Candice’s cheeks warmed at Bettina’s insinuations. Now she understood why Bettina had been looking so tired lately and wearing high-necked shirts.
“So, it’s Raul, then?” Candice’s disbelief was still evident. “Did your frequent encounters due to being neighbors lead to this? Did you fall for him because you saw him so often? This all seems to have happened rather quickly. As far as I know, Raul returned from his business trip in Denm three days ago.”
