“Don’t touch me! I have to answer the phone,” Candice said, clutching it as if it were her last shred of hope.
Then there was a knock on the office door. Raul’s voice came through, concerned. “Milton, open the door. I need to talk to you right now about something important.”
Milton got up from the sofa, headed to the door, opened it, and let Raul in.
Raul gave them a quick look. Their faces showed a calm exterior. Candice’s cheeks were flushed, and Milton seemed to be struggling to catch his breath. What they had done was blatantly obvious.
Candice straightened up and answered her phone. It was Bettina.
“Where are you now, Candice? Are you with Mr. Lopez?”
“Yes,” Candice replied.
“That’s great! Stay there. I took a walk around the building and saw news crews set up everywhere. You’re dead if you come out of hiding. Let’s see how Mr. Lopez handles this while you stay with him. Please don’t leave!”
“Alright,” Candice said.
“My brother says only Mr. Lopez can keep this under control. Wait until he’s done before you show up. Also, check your phone. The court summons was published online, and public opinion has shifted. I have to end this call now. As soon as I hear anything, I’ll call you.”
After ending the call, Candice looked around the office.
Raul and Milton were deep in conversation.
“Milton, what did you just do downstairs? Can you stop this reckless behavior? Our stock value is tumbling. It might crash as soon as the local market opens. Ten billion in market value could be lost in one day!”
Flipping through papers in his hands, Milton decided to call a subordinate.
“I need everyone moving. I want the second-quarter income statement released within the next half hour at the latest!”
Raul glanced at Candice, seated on the sofa, and muttered, “I’m sorry. Our first priority must be business.”
Despite their busy schedules, Raul asked his secretary to bring coffee and bread to Candice.
