Surprised, she turned to find Milton had brought her pizza, coffee, and dessert.
Suddenly, she realized how hungry she was. She hadn’t eaten anything since the morning court session, and their intimate encounter had drained her energy. She felt famished.
Milton seated himself and gestured toward the table.
Candice hesitated, but her hunger overpowered her desire to refuse him. She sat across from him.
A freshly baked pizza graced the plate. Had Milton spent the twenty minutes before sunset cooking pizza and making coffee instead of stewing in anger? Did he make these for her?
He slid a cup of coffee toward her.
Candice peered at the cup to find her favorite mocha. Milton had even artfully decorated the foam. She marveled at his refined taste and skill—he even knew how to decorate coffee foam. She took a sip, savoring the perfectly balanced blend of freshly ground coffee and sugar.
Milton lifted his own Americano, the bitter liquid coursing down his throat, echoing the bitterness in his heart. Yet, he remained silent.
Starving, Candice devoured two slices of pizza in silence. The mellow coffee and gentle sea breeze would have been heavenly if not for the tense atmosphere.
