Chapter 808
Chapter 811:
Once out of the bath, she slipped into her pajamas.
With nothing else on her plate and sleep a distant prospect at eleven o’clock, she decided to watch TV, something she hadn’t done in a while. Settling back onto the sofa, she switched on the large LCD TV nestled into the wall and selected a movie.
While Candice was rarely a movie watcher, especially not a fan of romantic dramas, she found herself unexpectedly engrossed in the one she had selected.
The film’s protagonist was a poor young woman. Her parents were deeply in debt, and her younger brother was a chronic vagrant, so she grew up in a financially unstable home. She went to school for accounting. She had a romantic encounter with a man from a different social class, became privy to the company’s upper echelons’ dark secrets, and witnessed their struggle over the heir. She was fighting to discover herself among the affluent and powerful clans with which she was associated. The plot was dated, but the characters were well-developed, and the financial machinations were compelling.
Candice, her arms wrapped around a bag of crisps, and with her eyes fixated on the flickering screen, didn’t notice as the time slipped away like sand through an hourglass.
Little did she know that Milton had returned in advance!
As he stepped inside, his eyes caught sight of the haphazardly discarded shoes and bag, scattered in disarray on the floor. He stooped down, collected the scattered items, and restored some order to the chaos. A peculiar aroma lingered in the air, a mix of instant noodles and fried chicken. Instantly, Milton’s countenance darkened.
With a purposeful stride, he entered the living room, only to be struck dumb by the scene before him.
There sat Candice, cross-legged on the couch, a veritable feast spread before her. The glow of the LCD screen bathed her in its light, while an array of fried chicken, instant noodles, and a bubbling Coca-Cola adorned the table.
𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨:
Candice was completely engrossed in the movie. She reached out her hand to grab her drink, not taking her eyes off the screen.
Finally, she got it.
But before she could take a sip, it was snatched away from her grasp! Startled, she looked up to find Milton standing beside her, his handsome face etched with gloom and tension.
Caught off guard, Candice’s mind raced. Wasn’t he supposed to return in the early morning? Why had he come back earlier than expected?
A sense of impending doom gripped her heart.
It pulsated through her veins, flushing her cheeks with heat.
