Yet, she was nearly paralyzed with fear. She had no desire to endure such disrespectful treatment again.
Her whole life had been derailed by what happened that night.
Milton gazed at her with a lustful intensity.
His piercing stare frightened her.
Because of this, Candice closed her eyes, refusing to look at him.
After struggling for a time, she finally gave up.

His breathing slowed somewhat.
He feared that if he let Candice go, she would relapse.
He was determined to prevent that. He convinced her to stay with him because he trusted himself to keep his desires in check. He felt safest with her under his care.
Milton needed to remain sober.
