Chapter 581
Chapter 581:
Belinda’s lips trembled, and she could barely utter a word. She was overwhelmed with gratitude. It was the first time anyone had comforted her and acknowledged that her actions were right since she found herself in this situation. Everyone had urged her to give in. Even the orphanage director, who had watched her grow up, had advised her to give in to Corless. The director had said she would be abandoned in a few years, once Corless grew bored of her, and at that time, she was still young and had a chance to start over in the future. The director said it was better than being tortured by Corless.
She had been in disbelief upon hearing the words of the orphanage’s director. She stated that they were in a position of poverty and powerlessness, and that they could do nothing but accept their fate.
Despite this, she refused to succumb to her fate, though she never imagined that things would take such a turn. However, it seemed as though her prayers had been answered as someone appeared to rescue her.
Sitting across from Candice, Belinda was deep in thought. Deep down, she hoped for a judgment that would grant her justice.
In today’s society, however, justice was difficult to come by for victims.
Even if Belinda won the case and was found innocent, she would still have to face the consequences of the past. The hurt and trauma she endured would never be fully erased, a shadow that followed her wherever she went. People would talk about her and gossip, casting her in a negative light.
Tears streamed down Belinda’s cheeks as she asked in a sobbing voice, “Miss Blake, do I still have a chance to get out of here?”
“Of course, or what’s the point of my coming here?” Candice, a professional human rights lawyer for women, looked serious but full of justice and confidence.
Belinda nodded vigorously and sniffed. “I’m aware that there’s a lot of discussion about this matter on the Internet these days. People are accusing me of being indecent, saying that I used my looks to seduce a wealthy man and then shifted the blame onto him when he abandoned me. But I really didn’t.”
Candice continued to sift through the documents. “The victim-blaming theory is a common misconception among the public,” she explained. “It suggests that victims are partially responsible for their misfortunes. It disregards the causality and the probability of occurrence. I strongly believe that such a theory only serves to justify criminal behavior to some extent. It is apparent that the evidence presented in your case is compelling. However, the newly introduced evidence from the opposing party is highly detrimental to your case.”

Candice instructed Belinda, “From now on, you must be entirely truthful with me, or I cannot aid you in this matter.”
Belinda, tears streaming down her face, nodded in agreement. “I trust you,” she said. “I will not conceal anything.”
Candice pressed on, “Let us begin then. The incident did not occur in Ploville, but rather in Wenkin. Is that right?”
“Yes,” Belinda replied in the affirmative, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Can you tell me why you went to Wenkin with Corless? Lots of people are wondering about this. This answer is very important.”
Belinda let out a heavy sigh. “To be honest, I didn’t know I was going on a business trip with Corless at first. I worked as a salesperson and was assigned to discuss some business in Wenkin. The team had tasked me with talking about imports and exports, specifically importing steel and exporting structural components. I was supposed to go there to learn something new with my team leader. But just before we set out, the leader informed me that the case was very important and that Mr. Warren would be accompanying us. At the time, I didn’t think anything was wrong. But when we arrived at the airport, my team leader said he had been assigned other work and wouldn’t be joining us. So Corless and I ended up being the only ones on the trip.”
