Chapter 20

Chapter 20:
Greyson tried to reach Candice, but she never responded to his texts or calls.
On Facebook, he saw a video posted by Bettina. She and Candice appeared to be together at the Starlight Pub.
A grimace crossed his face. He couldn’t recall ever seeing her at a pub before.
Immediately, he headed to the Starlight Pub in his car. The moment he stepped onto the dance floor, disbelief seized him!
Candice was a vision of sensual charm as she twirled on the dance floor.
Her movements were captivating!
As she danced, her hair and clothes fluttered with every step.
The music became lively, and everyone else on the dance floor gave way to Candice. All eyes in the pub were on her.
Candice surprised Greyson with her sexiness, allure, and dancing ability.
She grew more ecstatic as she danced, even twirling gracefully on her toes.
Many in the crowd exclaimed with delight.
Soon, the song ended.
Candice abruptly stopped, bringing her dance to a flawless finish.
The audience cheered and yelled enthusiastically.
Bettina walked Candice aside and asked, “Why is that guy here?”
Bettina’s gaze led Candice to the far corner of the dance floor, where Greyson stood with a stone expression.
Bettina said angrily, “Well, today, all we need to do is enjoy ourselves. You’ve divorced him, and he has no right to decide what you can and cannot do. Think about it—how many good things has he done in his past life to deserve your devotion, love, and forgiveness in this one? My heart has never felt right about that wretch!”
“I know that when we were in junior high, he saved your life and you told no one but me about it. Yet haven’t you already paid him back enough over the years? Does he not see? I mean, you are so gorgeous. Why would he choose Madilyn over you? Madilyn wouldn’t have been considered the prettiest girl in high school if you hadn’t worn your black-rimmed glasses and kept your hair down to hide your charm all day. Bah!”
Bettina couldn’t stop herself and finally fell silent.

Candice, on the other hand, chose to respond with silence.
She looked around at all the people and couples dancing.
Then Greyson and Candice locked gazes.
Both remained silent.
All they did was stare at each other blankly.
Bettina continued, oblivious to Candice’s unusual reaction, “Please tell me, have you talked with Greyson about how he saved you back then?”
Candice fell into silence.
No.
Until now, she had never talked about it with Greyson. She considered it one of her most precious memories.
That was also why she had such a hard time letting go of Greyson.
She was in her second year of junior high school and he was in his third year of senior high school when they first met.
Wilmint High School ranked first in Ploville when it came to education.
Greyson had always excelled in class.
It was the beginning of her second year in junior high school.
For the record, Greyson was eighteen that year and Candice had just turned fourteen.
She had earned first place in the National Math League, and her well-written piece appeared in several publications, earning her a full scholarship to transfer to Wilmint High School.
Because of how exceptional she was, she struggled at school. Bullying was a regular occurrence throughout the school.
She learned to conceal her attractiveness to prevent others from becoming envious. Her hair was always untidy, and she wore thick black-rimmed spectacles.
There were still many girls who looked down on her because of her high grades and purposefully avoided socializing with her.
One late afternoon, when it was already dark and classes were over, some girls from wealthy households locked her in the school’s cold storage after teasing and shaming her. It was a hot summer day, and Candice, who was wearing a flimsy dress, was shivering.
Wherever she looked, darkness prevailed. She could see nothing, as there was no illumination.
Nothing had ever made her feel so vulnerable or so afraid. She was sure her life was over!
