Chapter 14:
At the Harman family’s house, Madilyn saw Greyson returning and threw herself into his arms.
She apologized through sobs, “I’m sorry, Rey. I didn’t mean to lie to you. It was just so unfair that Candice and her mother made us separate three years ago. I wanted to seek justice for myself. I didn’t mean to hurt her. I just wanted to scare her…”
Although Madilyn tried her best to formulate an excuse, she could clearly tell that Greyson was distracted.
Rachel sensed Greyson’s distance and quickly chimed in, “Don’t be fooled by Candice. She has been hiding too many things from us. How could she use her lawyer’s identity to threaten Madilyn?”
Annoyed, Greyson glanced coldly at Madilyn and warned, “You know why I have always indulged you. Don’t challenge my bottom line.”
Madilyn was stunned. She knew he was referring to the time when she saved him many years ago.
Suddenly, she panicked. What if he found out the truth about that day?
Meanwhile, Greyson shot an icy glance at Rachel and said sarcastically, “She used her lawyer’s identity to threaten Madilyn? If she sued you, you’d be going to jail.”
Rachel turned pale and dared not say another word. She touched her nose, shivering at the thought of being sent to jail for slander.
Finally, the rain stopped.
Greyson left the house in an irritable state and drove aimlessly into the well-lit city.
When he pulled over, he realized he had been subconsciously driving along the seaside.
The endless sound of waves came one after another, stirring his thoughts.
He felt increasingly annoyed.
He got out of the car and lit a cigarette.
Just then, he recalled Candice’s harsh words and his abnormally fast pulse made him panic.
However, his panic lasted only a moment. When he finished his cigarette, everything returned to normal. He felt it would be the dumbest thing in the world to cause himself trouble.

He put out the cigarette and returned to his car.
Meanwhile, Candice had just arrived at Bettina’s house. Bettina was one of her closest friends. She was a typical rich girl but also fiercely loyal.
Candice was shivering, drenched from the rain.
Seeing her in such a sorry state, Bettina rushed to her side and wrapped a towel around her shoulders, urging, “Go take a hot bath.”
She had been in contact with Candice before her arrival and knew about her situation.
Candice headed to the bathroom and soaked in a hot tub.
She picked up her phone and mindlessly scrolled through her gallery.
There wasn’t even a photo of her and Greyson. No wedding photos, and her ring was self-bought.
Their wedding had been simple. She was like a bride her husband didn’t want the public to know about. She had no relatives invited, not even her friends. No one knew she existed.
The only benefit she had was listing Greyson as her spouse on official documents.
Even that lasted only one day.
She smiled with self-pity and opened WhatsApp.
Suddenly, a bright red notification icon popped up.
Surprised, she clicked on it.
Were her eyes playing tricks on her?
Greyson had requested to add her as a friend.
How could that be possible? Typically, he couldn’t even be bothered to look at her, let alone talk to her.
She suddenly remembered the times when her heart wavered again and again.
Whenever he treated her a little gentler than usual, her defenses would crumble.
If she grew softhearted again, even she would look down on herself.
Candice was about to lock her phone when Bettina yelled from outside the bathroom, “Candice, I almost forgot—you have an important appointment with the Royal Garden Corporation tomorrow. You have to be there!”
Bettina’s voice was so loud it took Candice by surprise. Her hand trembled, and she accidentally touched the screen.
When she came to her senses, she realized she had friended Greyson.
Her phone was now open to the chat box.
Her heart skipped a beat.
She held her breath and glanced at the screen. Luckily, Greyson hadn’t sent her a message.
She breathed a sigh of relief and wanted to block him. However, she didn’t, thinking it might be too obvious that she wanted to avoid him.
Suddenly, she thought of the man she had slept with and felt even more upset.
