She had witnessed her parents’ fatal car crash firsthand, and the experience had cast a long, dark psychological shadow over her—one that three years had not lifted.
Every time she tried to drive, the details of the accident replayed in her mind, rendering her unable to operate a vehicle.
Milton glanced back at Candice, who was now resting in the backseat. At last, she had calmed down and appeared to have fallen asleep.
Compassion filled Milton’s eyes in that moment.
Despite his aching arm, he raced the rest of the way home.
He parked in the yard, got out, and carefully carried Candice into the house, laying her on the large, plush bed.
As soon as her head touched the pillow, Candice abruptly woke up.

As she woke, she realized she was in Milton’s bedroom. Instinctively, she sat up quickly.
Milton covered his arm with one hand, his injury likely worsened from carrying her the whole way. “Hey! How do you feel right now?” he asked.
Candice got up from the bed and said, “I’m okay.”
Her back was damp with sweat, but once she got over her trauma, she would be fine.
Out of respect, Milton refrained from asking what had caused her condition.
“That was very bad of me, and I will never let you drive again. I’m so sorry.”

Bewildered, Candice hadn’t expected an apology from Milton. She thought she should have been the one driving in that situation.
She glanced quickly at his arm, remembering the knife cut, and saw blood dripping from his fingers.
“Your wound is bleeding. It looks bad!” Seeing the amount of blood, she said, “You should have gone to the hospital to get it treated.”
Unfazed, Milton said coolly, “It’s nothing. It’s not serious. I have a first aid kit in my room. I can take care of it myself.” After a brief pause, he glanced at her and added, “Though I could use your help.”
Candice nodded and helped him sit on the sofa.
“Where is the medical kit? I’m going to get it,” she asked.
“In the cabinet under the TV,” Milton replied, resting his head on the sofa and leaning back.
