Greyson was stunned.
Would he treat her differently? Of course he would! If he had known she had saved him, he would have acted differently. He would have shown interest in her instead of letting her pine for him in secret all these years.
A trivial thing? In her eyes, saving him was just a trivial thing.
Although she spoke lightly, Greyson knew the truth was far more complicated. She had risked everything to save him but was too humble to admit it. Candice was remarkable, yet he had never truly understood her until now.
He didn’t know whom to blame—himself for not realizing the truth or Candice for not telling him.
However, he realized he owed her a debt of gratitude, but also knew he hadn’t saved her in return. It was Milton who had come to Candice’s rescue, not him.
Damn it! Everything had been wrong.
He took a deep breath and looked at Candice with pity. She had turned her back to him, and he could feel the coldness radiating from her. She had already taken the divorce decree that belonged to her. Their relationship was now worse than that of strangers.
He recognized that she needed rest. After all, she had undergone an abortion operation today.
Gently, he rose from the bed and tucked her in, resisting the urge to caress her frail back. Finally, he withdrew his hand and held it behind him.
“I’ll be leaving now,” he whispered, his voice barely above a breath. “If you need anything, just press the red button beside your bed, and the nurse will attend to you. This is my hospital, and you will receive the best care possible. I’ll come back tomorrow to check on you.”
With one last glance at her still form, he turned and left the ward, extinguishing the light as he went.
Candice lay still on the bed, her eyes closed as she absorbed Greyson’s words.

Suddenly, a tear slipped down her cheek and soaked into the pillow.
The day’s events had left her physically and mentally drained, and she had no desire to listen to Greyson’s words or engage with his probing questions about her past.
Though her physical pain would eventually fade, the loss of her child, like the loss of her parents, was irreparable. The trauma in her heart was a wound that seemed impossible to heal.
Her phone had run out of battery, but she had no intention of charging it.
She did not want to speak to anyone or see anyone again; all she wanted was to be left alone.
Milton tried calling Erica repeatedly, but he couldn’t reach her. Realizing she was nowhere to be found, he headed back to the Gold Well Hotel. Chaos still lingered from the incident, and no one knew where Erica had gone.
Unable to locate her quickly, Milton checked all the surveillance cameras near the hotel entrance. After thoroughly reviewing the footage, he realized that Candice’s words were true. Although the cameras didn’t capture Erica pushing Candice down the stairs due to the angle, the footage clearly showed that only two people arrived at the hotel entrance: Candice and Erica.
