He held a tray from the nurses’ station with a syringe filled with Demerol, ready to use.

Her lips trembling, Candice shook her head and said, “I’m fine. You can go.”
Greyson placed a gentle hand on Candice’s arm and spoke softly, “Please don’t be so stubborn. The dose I’m giving is only to relieve your pain and won’t cause addiction. Besides, the medication is top quality, imported from abroad.”
Before Candice could protest, he rolled up her sleeve, disinfected the injection site, and skillfully administered the medication.
Candice felt only a brief sting as the injection was completed. It was clear Greyson was a competent medical professional.
Without a word, Candice lay on her side while Greyson noticed her wet clothes.
“Let me call the nurse to change your clothes,” he said. He glanced at the breakfast arranged at the foot of the bed and realized she hadn’t touched it.
The nutritious breakfast was something he had specially prepared for her, and there were no dietary restrictions preventing her from eating. Restoring her strength and nutrients was important.
He pressed a button, causing the electric bed to rise automatically, making Candice sit up in confusion.

Candice bit her lip hard as the medicine hadn’t taken effect yet. She looked at Greyson, feeling distant—as if he were a stranger. When did he become so attentive and caring? These were things she had longed for, but he had shown only indifference all these years. Now, she didn’t want his care anymore.
Greyson met her gaze and said, “I know you’re in pain. Hang in there; the medicine will start working in about ten minutes. Eating can help protect your stomach lining.”
Just then, Bettina burst into the ward and caught sight of Greyson feeding Candice breakfast.
She was taken aback. Was this really the same Greyson who had always been cold and selfish, never showing concern for Candice’s feelings? She rubbed her eyes, but it was no illusion. This was indeed Greyson. Had he changed? Did he finally regret how much Candice had suffered from injustice and mistreatment? It was too late.
