Chapter 638
Chapter 638:
Suddenly, Milton’s phone shattered the silence.
Milton muttered under his breath. “Damn it! Who could be calling at such an untimely hour?”
He retrieved his phone from his pocket and noticed that the incoming call was from Sigrid.
Simultaneously, Candice spotted the caller ID, and she hastily pushed him away.
Wearing a displeased expression, he turned around and reluctantly answered the phone.
“What’s up?”
Sigrid’s voice floated from the phone. “Milton, my mom’s in town. She’s meeting your mom tomorrow night. Why don’t you join us? She’s keen to meet you.”
Standing behind Milton, Candice could hear every word. She felt a chokehold on her breath and rushed out of the kitchen. She didn’t want to overhear their conversation.
Sigrid’s mother had come to Ploville and invited Erica for a get-together. If Sigrid and Milton joined in, it would effectively mean the relationship between the two of them was serious. What could be the topic of their conversation? Could they be discussing an engagement?
Marriages among the wealthy were nothing more than business deals. Regardless of their numerous affairs, for these affluent folks, marriage was the ultimate transaction. It was all about merging shares and redistributing power. For instance, the Royal Garden Corporation had merged with the Gonzalez Group, belonging to Erica’s parents. She scoffed. She was indeed making a fool of herself.
Who did she think she was?
As she recalled Erica’s words, her melancholy deepened.
After hearing Sigrid’s words, Milton responded, “I’m busy.” With a cold demeanor, he promptly ended the call.
Upon turning around, he discovered that Candice had left.

After stepping out of the kitchen, he noticed that the food Jarrod had brought here remained untouched. There was something that left him confused. Wasn’t she hungry? He presumed that she must be.
When he was about to ascend the stairs in search of her, his phone rang once again.
Impatiently, he retrieved his phone, paying no mind to the caller ID. Assuming it was still Sigrid, he answered curtly, “I said I’m busy!”
“Milton?” To his surprise, it was Erica on the line.
Milton was taken aback. His tone softened as he inquired, “Mom, what’s up?”
“I had something to tell you, but never mind. Since you’re busy, forget it,” Erica stated. “Don’t worry about the Olson family. I’ll handle it. Honestly, I didn’t even plan to ask you to attend the dinner in the first place, but since Sigrid inquired, I felt compelled to call you.”
“Fine,” Milton replied. “Anything else?”
A moment of silence ensued between them. After a lengthy pause, Erica cautiously asked, “I heard you’re planning to live somewhere else for a while?”
