Chapter 980
Chapter 986:
Kori shifted her gaze toward Milton and sobbed, “Mr. Lopez, please help me. You are well aware of the sacrifices I’ve made for your sake. You cannot stand idly by and watch my family plunge into financial ruin.”
Milton’s hands, hanging limply by his sides, involuntarily clenched. He contemplated moving toward Candice, but his legs felt burdened by invisible weights.
Kori’s desperation led her to spill the truth. She no longer cared; in any case, she had gotten the part and became famous. Her destiny was no longer hers to decide, but at least she could not meet her demise now. Regardless, she laid bare the whole truth.
“Candice, let me go. Do not complicate matters further. I am genuinely innocent.” Kori gestured toward Milton. “I have no involvement with Mr. Lopez. I never even laid a finger on him. Really, you have to trust me.”
She then turned to Milton and offered an apology. “I apologize, Mr. Lopez. I can no longer continue with this charade, and I have no desire for any future financial arrangements.”
Milton’s brow furrowed as he rubbed his temples, feeling utterly powerless.
Candice extended her legs, attempting to distance herself from Kori, and said icily, “Let go of me.”
An anxious tremor laced Kori’s voice as she implored, “Candice, you have to trust me. Everything I’ve said is true. I’m an actress. You know that. It’s my profession. Please don’t hold it against me. Moreover, I’ve never done anything to harm you. In Wilmint High School, the ones who bullied you were Cathy and Alta. I’ve never been involved in any of that, you know.”
Candice’s lips curled into a mocking sneer. “Wasn’t it a crime to watch me being bullied? Wasn’t it a crime to aid them in bullying me? You spent all day with those two. They were involved in all sorts of mischief. You knew it all too well, but you turned a blind eye. That was the gravest crime of all.”

“No,” Kori vigorously shook her head and countered, “I didn’t intend to follow them. My family wasn’t as wealthy as theirs. I couldn’t afford to stand up to them. I’m useless. I’m not like you. So, I caved. But when you were locked in that cold storage, I discreetly alerted the staff to free you. I didn’t leave until you and Milton were safe. I may be a coward, but I’m not that kind of person.”
Candice’s voice was tinged with incredulity as she questioned, “What? You were aware that it wasn’t just me stuck in that cold storage?”
“Indeed,” Kori shifted her gaze back to Milton. “I knew both of you were trapped. I hung around near the cold storage because I couldn’t find any staff initially. I stayed awake all night and only left when I saw both of you had been freed. Believe me, I’m being honest. Even Mr. Lopez is aware of this. He asked me about it. Perhaps he discovered that the worker who opened the door had been guided by me. How else would I be connected to Mr. Lopez?”
Kori advanced a couple of steps, gripping Candice’s legs more firmly. “I helped you out once. Candice, please don’t hand any of this over to the prosecutor. I vow to disappear from this place immediately, and you won’t see me around Mr. Lopez ever again. I won’t get in your way. I never want to take him away from you. I mean it! Everything I’ve said is the truth. I know my place. Mr. Lopez is out of my league, whether it’s family background or intellect. My only ambition is to be an actress, gain some recognition, do some advertising gigs to earn a living, and support my parents. Please.”
