Chapter 229
Chapter 229:
He tried to stay as far away from the table as possible so that he wouldn’t touch the greasy stains on it.
At that moment, the food stall owner came over with a clean cloth in her hand.
“Hello. You must be a big boss, sir. I would like to welcome you personally to my humble eatery. Let me clean the table for you.” As she spoke, she wiped down the table thoroughly, making sure it was squeaky clean. Then, she smiled at Candice and Milton before returning to the worktop to prepare Candice’s order.
Milton sat stiffly. He was having trouble overcoming his aversion to places like this.
Candice arched her eyebrows and asked, “Are you sure you want to eat here? I advise you not to.”
Milton glanced at the worktop and asked, “Are you sure the food here is safe to eat? You won’t get a stomachache after eating here?”
Candice shrugged and replied, “I know I won’t. I used to eat here a lot when I was in college. I’m just not sure whether your stomach can handle the food here. After all, you’re used to eating expensive stuff, right?”
It was late at night, and as time passed, more and more students came to the food stall to eat. They were all students of Ploville University.
A group of girls walked into the shed and sat down. One of them noticed Milton right away and whispered to her friends, “Oh my God! Look! That guy is super handsome.”
“Oh yeah, so attractive. I have never seen such a striking man before, even in movies. Look at that lean yet strong body. And those eyes—I bet I’m going to faint if I look straight into those beautiful eyes. What is he doing at a roadside food stall like this? Am I really seeing him, or am I just dreaming?”
The girl who just spoke pinched herself hard.
“Oh, I’m not dreaming.”
“He’s the kind of dreamboat a girl marries, don’t you think?” “Look at his clothes. They must be very expensive, all top brands. He must be a big shot.” “Who’s that woman he’s with?”
“Who cares? She doesn’t matter. For all we know, she’s a scheming bitch who clings to the rich and powerful to lift herself up. I’ve read way too many novels with this scene. A nameless, penniless woman takes a wealthy man to eat at a roadside food stall so he may experience how ordinary people live. It’s the Cinderella trick.”
“Hey, take a picture. Turn the flash off, or they’ll notice. I’ll post it online later. I’m sure it will go viral if I caption it, ‘Saw a wealthy man eating street food to experience ordinary life today.’ People are going to eat that up.”

Candice was close enough to overhear their discussion.
She couldn’t help frowning.
What a joke! How could they talk such nonsense?
They didn’t even know her. How could they assume she was a gold-digging schemer?
Candice narrowed her eyes. When she noticed they were taking photos of Milton without consent, she turned to them and addressed them directly.
