Candice sneered and said, “You don’t need to know why I’m here.”
One of Madilyn’s friends piped in, “Madilyn, is this the annoying lady you always mention? She looks ridiculous coming here in those tattered rags!”
Another woman echoed her, “Is she really a lawyer? I guess she’s just an assistant. How could she possibly afford to shop at high-end stores?”
One of them noticed the bracelet on Candice’s left wrist.
“Wow, look, Madilyn, she’s wearing a fake!”
Madilyn examined Candice’s wrist. She had never seen her wearing an emerald green bracelet before. Candice raised her hand and replied, “You said fake?”
Madilyn’s friend replied disdainfully, “Please throw that thing in the trash immediately. You shouldn’t risk your health wearing a fake bracelet. Actually, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen a real person sporting a counterfeit. It’s hilarious. You really try hard to put on airs!”
Another woman added cynically, “What a vain woman you are. Don’t you know that if that bracelet were real, the only place you’d find it for sale would be at a museum auction? It would probably cost hundreds of millions of dollars. So, tell us, where did you get it?”
“Hundreds of millions?” Candice murmured, paying no attention to their mockery. The phrase “hundreds of millions” echoed in her mind.
Today, Madilyn felt like she’d won for the first time. “What a shameless bitch you are, Candice. A real emerald bracelet would cost at least two or three hundred million. Don’t wear fake crap if you can’t afford the real thing! How did I never notice you were such a pretentious bitch?”
Candice was thrown off. Was she really talking about two or three hundred million?
She had no time to dwell on their ridicule and instinctively covered her wrist.
Madilyn continued her mockery, “Look at her trying to hide the bracelet. She knows full well how stupid it is to wear it.”
The moment Candice learned how priceless the bracelet was, she hid it.
She was mostly uninformed about emeralds and other fine jewelry, having no desire for them and no idea of their market value. How could she ever compensate Milton if she accidentally damaged it? There was no way she could pay hundreds of millions!
After all, Milton had more money than anyone else in Ploville. It was impossible for his belongings to be counterfeit.
So, the bracelet she wore was truly a treasure.
But most importantly… she couldn’t remove it!
Madilyn was quite pleased to see Candice remain silent. She swept her long hair behind her ears, revealing a sparkling necklace around her neck.
One of her friends said enviously, “What a gorgeous necklace! That’s a Harry Winston! It must cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
Madilyn showed off, staring intently at Candice, teasing her, “This was a birthday present from Rey to me. Very stunning. I guess some people just can’t afford that.”
Finally, Candice responded, turning her gaze to Madilyn’s neck.
The ruby-diamond necklace was a clear sign that Greyson intended to stay by Madilyn’s side.
Candice’s chest felt tight with upset.
That necklace was from Greyson, on her birthday?! He had never remembered her birthday, much less bothered to get her a present. He treated her with such indifference.
Her passion for him was slowly fading away.
Candice stayed silent despite Madilyn’s humiliation and verbal attacks.
Then, Bettina suddenly appeared from behind.
She reached out and yanked the necklace from Madilyn’s neck.
Before Madilyn could react, her necklace broke.
Screaming, she threatened to physically attack Bettina, who quickly threw a check at Madilyn’s face.
“It’s just a necklace worth hundreds of thousands. Bitch, I can easily afford that!”
Astonished, Candice turned her gaze toward Bettina.
A check?! That was so like Milton.
