Chapter 72

Chapter 72:
“Candice, you don’t look well,” Bettina said with concern. She touched Candice’s forehead and then her own. “Your body feels a bit hot.”
Candice scrunched her face. She had only claimed to have a cold as an excuse, but now she was actually starting to feel unwell. Bettina’s words sent a sudden chill through her.
Candice had been pushing herself too hard lately; her body was clearly breaking down under the stress. Maybe she had caught a cold from the restless nights she’d endured.
Bettina took her arm gently and led her to the car. “No work for you today. Go home and rest.”
“Okay,” Candice replied without protest.
Bettina drove her back to Greyson’s apartment. The moment Candice got inside, she felt so weak she collapsed onto the sofa.
Bettina heated some water on the stove. “Do you have a thermometer? You’re running a fever.”
“It’s fine. I’ll sleep it off,” Candice replied, curling up under the covers.
Bettina set the hot water on the coffee table and glanced at her watch. “Oh no, I have a meeting in an hour. If you’re not up, I’ll have to go. And there’s a dinner party tonight that I can’t cancel. This is so hectic.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. Just a cold,” Candice assured her.
“Call me if you need anything,” Bettina said before leaving.
“I will. I have medicine at home. I’ll take it later,” Candice waved her off.
Once the door closed, Candice took a quick shower, put on her pajamas, and got into bed.
When she woke up, drenched in sweat, darkness had already fallen outside.
She hadn’t eaten all day, and her stomach growled with hunger.
But she didn’t have the energy to drag herself out of bed to get something to eat downstairs.
Living in a fancy apartment building had its downsides. Takeout could only be delivered to designated drop-off points.

She heard the door creak open suddenly and assumed it was Bettina returning.
“Bettina, I thought you were at the dinner party. Why did you come back? I’m fine,” Candice muttered groggily. She turned over and tried to fall back asleep. She was famished but couldn’t be bothered to get up yet.
When a cold hand pressed against her forehead, she knew it wasn’t Bettina’s touch.
Rolling over, she saw Greyson standing there. Of course, it had to be him. Bettina knew the code, and Greyson had a key.
“You have a fever,” he said in a rough voice. “I asked you to come to Harmony Hospital. Why didn’t you come?”
“I just want to sleep,” Candice tugged the covers up to her chin and let out a long yawn. “It’s not serious. I don’t want to disturb you, Dr. Harman.”
“But you went to another hospital, Candice,” he said, his face etched with concern.
Candice’s forehead creased. When Greyson called her earlier, she had slipped up and mentioned bumping into Madilyn. She had a hunch he probably checked with Madilyn about it, which was how he knew she had gone elsewhere.
“I just stopped by to get some medicine,” Candice replied, facing the other way.
“Where is the medicine you got? I want to check if it’s the right one for you,” Greyson said.
Candice was stunned. She hadn’t even gotten a prescription for any medicine. Why was he being so persistent?
She waved her hand and said in a rude tone, “Look, I’m trying to sleep. You said you wouldn’t come here, right? Yet here you are for the second time, disrupting my life. Please, just go.”
She sensed Greyson getting up and leaving the room, then let out a sigh of relief.
Little did she know that he left the room but not the apartment. It was his apartment, so he knew every nook…
He knew every nook and cranny of the apartment.
He felt that Candice saw the place merely as somewhere to sleep.
Apart from the living room and guest bedroom, it seemed she never entered any other parts of the apartment.
The study, master bedroom, and other rooms looked as if no one had been in them for quite some time.
