Seeing Raul leave, Milton walked up to Candice, about to say something.
But Candice picked up her bag, preparing to leave. Since the reporters surrounding the building had already left, there was no reason for her to stay.
“Wait!” Milton grabbed her wrist. “I’ll drive you home.”
Candice shook off his grip. “No, thanks. I can go home on my own.”
Seeing Milton still trying to stop her, she took two steps back.
She warned him in an icy voice, “Don’t forget we’re on opposing sides, Milton. Now that I’ve taken over the human rights case, I’ll be responsible for it and see it through. As for the personal attorney job, I hope you can help terminate the contract amicably. And I will definitely find a way to return the bracelet to you.”
Milton narrowed his eyes.
After saying her piece, Candice turned and went straight to the elevator.
Walking out of the building, she put on her mask, hailed a taxi at the entrance, and headed home.
It was getting dark. On the way, Candice watched the city lights pass one by one through the car window.
She went straight to Starsea Street. It wasn’t her own home, but she had no other place to go at the moment.
After paying the fare, she got out of the taxi and made her way to the elevator. She pressed the button for her floor.
The elevator doors whirred shut slowly.
But at the last moment, someone stuck their hand in the gap, stopping them from closing. Sensing the blockage, the doors reopened.
When Candice saw who had halted the elevator, she was stunned.
It was Milton. How had he arrived so quickly? And how had she not noticed him following her?
“What are you doing here?” Candice asked, then looked around.
They had just made headlines with their latest issue. If someone spotted them together again, it would be a whole new mess to deal with.

Milton glanced at the illuminated button—18. High-end apartment buildings like this had only one unit per floor.
At that moment, it was too late to stop the elevator from going up.
Candice could do nothing but let Milton go upstairs with her.
“I just want to check if the problem is completely resolved and if there are any reporters waiting for you at your front door,” Milton answered in a relaxed tone.
Then the elevator stopped, and the doors opened.
Milton took Candice’s hand and led her out.
The corridor was empty.
“No reporters here. You may leave now,” Candice said, her face betraying some emotion.
What was he thinking? Why had he come to her residence? He said it was to see if reporters were waiting for her. What a ridiculous excuse! How could she believe that? If reporters were really at her apartment, they would have seen the two of them together. If that happened, there would be no way to explain themselves.
