She even felt grateful to Milton. From beginning to end, he never mentioned the dinner. He hadn’t asked about her past with Greyson either. She knew he was trying to protect her self-esteem.
“Try the hamburger. It used to be my favorite.” Lowering her head, Candice took a careful bite of her hamburger.
Milton also took a bite of his hamburger.
He relaxed his furrowed brows after a few bites. “Not bad. I never thought food from a roadside stall would be edible.”
Candice chuckled. “You should try it more often. If this food weren’t edible, thousands of people would starve.”
Just then, Lara arrived with pies, placing them on their table. They looked delicious.
“Enjoy your meal,” Lara said before attending to the other guests who had just arrived.
Milton said, “Which one do you like the most?”
Candice picked up one of the pies and handed it to Milton. “Try this. It’s banana pie. These pies are all delicious. They have fresh fillings inside.” As she spoke, she took a bite of an apple pie and looked satisfied.
Milton observed her and realized that Greyson had never brought Candice here before since the owner had just said this was Candice’s first time bringing her boyfriend. And it was her favorite place to eat.
It made him feel better knowing that he was now the one accompanying her here.
After finishing the pie in his hand, he took a bite of another.
His eyes lit up as he savored the taste. It was incredibly delicious. “This is really good. What is the filling?” he asked after finishing the pie.
Without looking up from her pie, Candice replied, “Pig skin.”
Milton was stunned by her answer. His scalp tingled, and he instinctively covered his mouth to stave off nausea.
Pig skin? He had never eaten such a thing before, considering it dirty.
Noticing his discomfort, Candice chuckled and teased, “Don’t tell me you’ve never tried pig skin before? It’s actually good for you—full of collagen. Plus, you never would’ve known if you hadn’t asked, right?”

Milton was left speechless.
After the meal, Candice wiped her lips with a napkin and turned to Lara. “Lara, I’ll pay the bill.”
Approaching the table, Lara announced the total. “That’ll be eighty.”
Candice reached into her bag and withdrew a crisp hundred-dollar bill. “Keep the change.”
“I knew you’d do this.” A grin crept onto Lara’s face as she set a small bag in front of Candice. “I’ve packed two bean curds for you. Take them with you. It’s been years since I last saw you. Don’t be a stranger.”
As she turned to Milton, Lara’s eyes twinkled. “Sir, Candice is a good girl. You’re a lucky man.”
