Chapter 320
Chapter 320:
As soon as he picked her up, Candice woke.
In a daze, Candice opened her eyes and realized she was in Milton’s arms.
She nudged him and said, “Milton, let go of me. I’m not done working.”
She had fallen asleep again while writing an indictment. This had happened several times already—at night, she would work in the study until she passed out, and the next day, she would wake up in her bed.
She knew it was Milton who had been tucking her in lately. She struggled to get up, but Milton held her tighter, glaring at her.
“Enough, Candice. You’re exhausted. If I have to hold you down in bed until you fall asleep again, I will.”
Hearing that, Candice fell silent.
She didn’t want to argue with him. Instead, she turned a deaf ear to his insistence.
“I’ve done a lot already. Just let me finish.”
Seeing that Milton was already at her bedroom door, Candice protested softly, “No. Just pick up where you left off tomorrow. Unless you want me to force you to sleep another way.”
With that, she cocked her head to the side. What did he mean? What was this “other way” of forcing her to sleep?
Seeing Candice’s confused expression, Milton lowered his head and gave her a wicked smile.
He pushed the bedroom door open, walked in, and gently took Candice to bed.
The soft mattress felt so comforting against Candice’s back. Without looking at Milton, she grabbed the quilt and pulled it over herself. She turned on her side, facing away from him. Then, she closed her eyes and pretended to fall asleep.
Milton hadn’t closed the bedroom door completely, so the light from the living room streamed in through the crack, while the bedroom lights remained off.
Milton sat on the edge of the bed for a while, waiting until Candice stopped moving and her breathing became steady.

After a few minutes, he stood up and started walking out of the room. But before he left, he turned around, walked back toward the sleeping Candice, and planted a soft kiss on her cheek. It was a sweet, innocent good-night kiss.
Then he left, closing the door softly behind him.
As soon as Milton was gone, Candice opened her eyes. She hadn’t been asleep at all; in fact, she had been wide awake the entire time.
She had only pretended to be asleep so that Milton would give up and leave her alone.
She stayed in bed, listening to Milton’s footsteps moving toward the living room. Moments later, the living room lights went out, and she heard the front door creak open and then shut.
Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief and sit up in bed. Her expression was hidden in the darkness.
