Chapter 646
Chapter 646:
As this realization dawned on Bettina, she ignored the pain coursing through her body and jolted upright, her movements swift and determined. Struggling, she tried to get out of bed.
To her surprise, Bart wasn’t asleep—he was merely resting with his eyes closed. Abruptly, he opened them and gripped Bettina with one arm. “Bettina, it’s the middle of the night. Where do you think you’re going?”
Bettina turned and glared at the man she despised. “Release me. I’ve complied with your demands. What more could you possibly want?”
She was being blackmailed by Bart. If he were to spill the truth to Candice, how could she ever face her friend? She was the reason for Candice’s misery—her broken marriage, her first time, and her complicated entanglement with Milton—it was all her doing.
After dinner, Bart had taken her directly to the top-floor suite.
Violated by him, she had no choice but to grit her teeth and endure.
Her own past negligence was to blame. She had been deceived, tricked by this man, and ended up hurting her closest friend.
Sneering, Bart seized her chin, spun her around, and pushed her down again. “Who gave you permission to leave? If you dare reject me, I’ll make sure your secrets are exposed to the world.”
And with that, he continued to impose his will on her.
The dawn of a new day arrived.
Candice awoke feeling revitalized. Despite spending the night in the woods, she had managed to rest well. Fully rejuvenated, she greeted the morning with energetic zest.
The sight of the handsome face close to hers startled her momentarily. Then she realized she was home, in her room, with Milton sleeping beside her.
He had stayed with her throughout the night.
Still lost in slumber, his arms were draped around her waist. His tousled hair gave him an appealingly lazy look. Upon closer inspection, she noticed his eyelashes were longer than any woman’s, framing his perfect almond-shaped eyes.

She found herself gazing at him intently, a hint of envy stirring within her. Why was he so breathtaking? Was he trying to outshine every woman?
Compelled by his attractive visage, her hand reached out, drawn toward his handsome face.
The previous day, she had discovered evidence that the surveillance footage had been tampered with, leading her to believe in Erica’s innocence. She also realized that what had happened on her wedding night was far more complicated than she had initially thought. If the real intention of this unidentified enemy was to harm Milton…
A sudden pang of distress seized her heart, leaving her somewhat breathless. She couldn’t bear the thought of him being hurt.
She would not sit idle if anyone tried to harm him.
She pondered the possibility that the perpetrator might know both of them.
