Chapter 727
Chapter 727:
Startled, she assumed the gangster had discovered her. Swiftly, she crouched and found cover behind a shelf, silencing her every sound.
As Milton infiltrated the icy sanctuary of the cold storage, a peculiar sensation washed over him. A ghostly familiarity called out to him, drawing him in deeper.
The footsteps that echoed grew louder, and Candice’s anxiety spiked. She held little hope of combating the thug if it came to it. Slowly, she found a cubical metal pipe hidden under the shelf. She slid the pipe cautiously to her side, readying it as a weapon of last resort. With the person drawing nearer, her palms grew damp against the metal pipe.
Recognizing the faint echo of a breath, a rhythm he knew too well, Milton knew it was her. A surge of happiness filled him, and he was about to utter her name. Unexpectedly, Candice lunged from her hiding spot behind the shelf, raising the metal pipe to strike him.
Luckily, Milton’s instincts were swift. He caught the other end of the pipe, pulling her into a tight embrace. Before she could resist, he whispered in her ear, “It’s me.”
Upon hearing the familiar, captivating, and comforting voice, Candice was taken aback, causing her body to go limp. She released her grip on the steel pipe she held tightly and collapsed into his sturdy embrace.
Milton let the pipe fall to the floor, pulling her even closer. He nuzzled into her neck, breathing her in, relief washing over him. He reassured her, “I’m here. Everything’s okay.”
“Alright.” Candice managed to utter through her sobs.
All the while, they remained oblivious.
During this intimate moment, someone outside locked the cold storage’s metal door.
When a warehouse worker, out on his routine rounds, noticed the door ajar, he promptly closed it. Muttering under his breath, he chastised, “Who the heck left the door open after work? If something’s missing, guess who’s getting blamed? Unbelievable!”
After some time, Candice gently lifted her face from Milton’s comforting embrace and asked, “What happened to the gangster?”
“He’s been taken care of.” In the dim light, Milton caressed her hair and softly traced her cheek. He asked, “Did you get hurt?”
“I’m fine.” Shaking her head, Candice voiced, “We need to leave. It’s freezing in here.”
“Agreed,” Milton responded.
As they made their way to the exit and prepared to swing the door open, Candice abruptly sensed something amiss.
The door, once hidden from sight, was now firmly shut!
She blurted out, “Oh my God! The door’s shut tight!”
Milton kept his cool, attempting to twist the disk on the sturdy metal door, only to find it unyielding.
“Somebody must’ve strolled by and sealed the door from the outside,” he inferred.
