Chapter 729
Chapter 729:
He panicked momentarily, dropping his phone and quickly enveloping her in a comforting embrace, attempting to warm her with his body heat.
He understood her fear of the cold storage; her traumatic stress induced by such a setting was something he was all too familiar with. He needed to find a way to alleviate her fear, to prevent an impending episode.
“You’re safe. I’m right here with you,” he reassured her gently.
But his attempts at soothing Candice seemed futile. Her eyes remained unfocused, and her trembling intensified. Milton sensed that she was teetering on the edge of losing control.
Placing his chin on her forehead, he began to stroke her back, trying to mitigate her tremors.
With a voice as soft as a whisper, he suggested, “How about I sing a song for you?”
The melody was delivered with exquisite beauty.
His sound was pure and enjoyable, with a character of its own, its delightful resonance filling up the cold storage. Candice was taken aback when the initial words flowed from Milton’s lips.
It was as if she was anchored to her place, frozen in disbelief.
Her heartbeat faltered, and she momentarily lost her rhythm of breath.
His voice was soft yet powerful, deep and enthralling, as if casting a spell, like unfolding a vintage journal filled with treasured memories.
Candice extended her hand and fumbled for his mobile phone.
Her fingers, shaky with excitement, grasped his phone and directed it towards him. The artificial light from the phone’s torch sketched his striking silhouette, simultaneously vibrant and vague.
His eyes gently shut, and his slim lips moved rhythmically, exuding an irresistible allure.
As the song concluded, Milton cast his gaze upon Candice.

Candice bit her pale lips nervously and then stuttered, “Was it you?”
Under the torch’s glow, Milton draped them both in a warm rock wool insulation blanket, warding off the icy gusts from the storage room. It reminded her of the time he had wrapped her in a bubble bag to conserve her warmth.
The blanket proved effective, warding off the cold, and their bodies were safe from the biting chill.
Memories from the past surfaced.
Candice, with her trembling fingers, clung onto his shirt and pressed, “Was it you who were there with me ten years ago?”
“Yes, it was me,” Milton confessed.
“In my jacket pocket, you’ll find some chocolate. Have it when you need some energy. Chocolate is a good source of instant energy.” He gestured towards her shoulder and his jacket. “Ever since that incident, I’ve made it a habit to carry chocolates. I always felt it could be useful at times.”
