Chapter 795
Chapter 795:
Wasn’t he supposed to be exercising self-control?
The persistent ringtone disturbed Candice’s peaceful sleep. Her latest cell phone featured a unique setting. With the mute mode activated, if someone called her five times within an hour without receiving an answer, the phone would automatically play a distinct ringtone. It was designed to help her not miss any crucial communication.
Grudgingly, Candice opened her eyes. The room was dark with the curtains drawn, and the time was indistinguishable due to her deep slumber.
She reached for her phone and was stunned to find it was nearly noon.
Jolting upright in surprise, she quickly answered the ringing phone.
Bettina’s voice rang out from the other end. “Hey, were you planning on showing up at the law firm today? We had all decided on a partners’ meeting. Did that slip your mind?”
Candice ran her hand through her hair, unable to fathom how she could have forgotten the meeting. The room was empty, and Milton had left. Yet, Candice had slept until noon!
“Apologies, I overslept,” Candice responded as she hit the button for the automatic curtains. As the curtains gradually parted, she found herself almost blinded by the brilliant sunlight.
“Overslept? You never sleep until noon! Candy, your voice sounds rough. What’s wrong? Are you okay? You seemed fine when you left the law firm yesterday. Did you catch a cold? Are you unwell?”
Candice detected the raspy quality in her voice. She cleared her throat and deflected, “Oh, perhaps I’ve caught a cold. Can we possibly reschedule the meeting for tomorrow? I need to take the day off, and I won’t be coming in today.”
In fact, Candice wasn’t ill. Her exhaustion was the result of Milton’s ceaseless demands. At that moment, she doubted her ability to show up at the law firm. She would rather remain home than draw attention to her condition.

“Candy, you’ve been taking a lot of time off lately, and you’ve been leaving the law firm early when you do show up. Are you taking care of Mr. Lopez? His broken arm must be a hindrance. Is he okay? How’s his recovery coming along?” Bettina asked, concern evident in her voice.
“He’s okay. He’s not going to drop dead or anything,” Candice grumbled.
“You should be worried about me, not him.”
“What? Why?” Bettina asked, confused. “I don’t think you’re hurt.”
“I’m tor…” Candice wanted to say “tortured,” but she stopped herself, afraid of how it might sound.
“I’m sick and tired of him,” Candice responded.
“Well, I need to get up. I have some work to take care of. Could you tell my assistant that I’ll send the documents to her after I make some adjustments?”
