Chapter 856
Chapter 859:
She handed him a bag containing two hair strands and toothbrushes, and uttered, “Here are samples from two individuals.”
The examiner asked, “Okay, what exactly do you want to identify?” He gazed at the contents of the transparent plastic bag—one long strand of hair and a shorter one, clearly belonging to a man and a woman.
“Blood relationship. Urgent,” Candice replied, her voice trembling involuntarily. Even if she repeated it a thousand times in her mind, telling herself that it couldn’t be possible, she couldn’t help but worry.
“Okay. But you may need to wait a few days. We can’t conduct urgent tests right now,” the examiner explained.
Candice was stunned for a moment and asked, “Why?”
She remembered that it used to take a few days to receive the results, but technological advancements had shortened the wait time. By paying an emergency fee, one could now get the results in half a day.
“Unfortunately, the machine is broken. It is currently under repair. I’m uncertain about the duration of the repairs,” the examiner said, a helpless look on his face.
Candice felt disappointed, her anxiety growing. The more she longed for answers, the further they seemed to slip away. A sense of helplessness and depression washed over her.
Sensing her distress, the examiner suggested, “How about you leave an email? Once the machine is fixed and the results are ready, I will send them to you as soon as possible. You can return to collect the report at your convenience.”
“Okay,” Candice replied eagerly, grateful for this alternative.
She promptly left her work email address. As she walked out of the identification center, everything seemed hazy, as if she were in a dream.
She didn’t dare show any emotions in front of Milton.
Regardless of what he had done to her, she had to remain obedient. Candice couldn’t shake off the memories of the tumultuous night before.

It had driven her to the brink of madness. The world, as she saw it, had gone completely insane.
When she returned to the Hope Law Firm, a peculiar trance enveloped Candice.
Switching on the computer, she immersed herself in the world of documents, drafting two additional indictments. Only by throwing herself wholeheartedly into her tasks could she momentarily escape the vexations that plagued her. Yet, a sudden pang of regret pierced her heart. She realized she should have procured two more samples and arranged for the sibling DNA testing at separate identification centers.
But her fear of Milton detecting her actions held her back. In this moment of uncertainty, Candice yearned for the test results yet dreaded their implications, leaving her in a state of anxious anticipation. From time to time, she anxiously paced back and forth in her office.
At noon, her phone abruptly rang, jolting her from her contemplation. She glanced down and saw Milton’s name flashing on the screen.
Summoning her courage, she pressed the answer button.
“Have you had lunch yet?” Milton asked.
