Chapter 938
Chapter 944:
As the guests began to arrive one after another, Candice felt increasingly uncomfortable standing alone.
It wasn’t her place to welcome the guests, but with no one from the Lopez family around, she couldn’t simply ignore them. So, she mustered a forced smile and greeted each guest individually, struggling to maintain her composure.
Bettina, being skilled in handling such situations, took charge. She made arrangements and contacted the host who was scheduled to arrive later, ensuring a smooth transition. She also asked the host to entertain the guests, granting Candice a moment to take a break.
As the hours slipped away, Candice felt her restlessness grow.
The weight of it all bore down on her, threatening to shatter her grasp. Then, in that fleeting moment, a figure entered the room—tall, with a striking handsomeness.
For an instant, Candice mistook him for Milton, her heart surging with joy.
Yet, as he drew nearer, recognition pierced through her elation. This was not the one she had yearned for; this man was Elmo.
Disappointment washed over her, mingling with a bewildering confusion. Why had Milton not arrived? Her anxiety mounted, coursing through her veins like wildfire. It threatened to consume her entirely.
Approaching Candice, Elmo gazed upon her with astonishment and exclaimed, “Behold, what a magnificent lady! Your eyes, your nose, your flawless skin, your enchanting lips… Every feature is a masterpiece! You walk in beauty, like the night itself, with unblemished heavens and celestial lights. In your presence, darkness and radiance converge, creating a bewitching allure. Miss Blake, you are the embodiment of every man’s deepest desires tonight.”
Candice found herself perturbed, unable to find solace in his words. “Your flattery knows no bounds, and it offends me,” she retorted, her voice firm and resolute.

Elmo, taken aback, responded with a wounded grievance, “No, I did not mean to offend. You misconstrued my words, and for that, you have wronged me.”
Candice had reached a point where she no longer wanted to engage in conversation with him. Nevertheless, she felt compelled to inquire, her voice laced with reluctance. “Why are you here?”
The man shrugged casually, a faint smile playing on his lips. “I received the invitation. Surely you checked the guest list? I’ve been friends with Milton for many years. Don’t you know?”
Candice was stunned. She really didn’t know. The guest list held no appeal for her, so she neglected to peruse it. Only Bettina, along with a few colleagues from the law firm, had received her personal invitation. The rest were all Milton’s guests.
It turned out that Elmo and Milton were good friends. Today marked the first time she became aware of their bond.
“You would do well to extend courtesy to your friend’s fiancée. Be a gentleman,” Candice cast him a warning glance.
