Chapter 987
Chapter 994:
Seeing that he didn’t take the keys, she tossed them onto his desk with a loud clink.
From her bag, Candice extracted a document, an agreement that had been prepared for this moment. “This agreement between us is now null and void. I’ve already paid the sum,” she stated.
Milton’s lips quivered, and he reached out to stop her, but it was too late. He had never wanted to sever all ties with her, even if it was only a professional connection.
In front of him, Candice ripped the agreement in half, casting it to the floor.
Milton’s eyes, cast downward, held the weight of his shattered heart, fractured beyond any hope of restoration.
Wasn’t this the very outcome he had orchestrated, hoping she would sever their ties? Why, then, did he feel as if his soul had plunged into a depth of suffering that even death could not match? Breathing became increasingly difficult with each passing second.
In a sudden surge of raw emotion, Candice raised her hand and, with a swift yet deliberate motion, removed the necklace that adorned her slender neck. She flung it toward his handsome face.
“The necklace, Milton, may be unbreakable, but remember, its connection is most fragile. The Shackle of Love now lies in ruins. We are, from this point forward, strangers!”
The cold metal descended along Milton’s cheek, his reflexes catching it in his palm. As he clenched his fist, his knuckles revealed the strain, the torment of receiving back everything she could.
He stood there, unyielding, his Adam’s apple moving as if swallowing shards of glass with each gulp.
There was no need to pour oil on the flames at this juncture. Without uttering a word, Sigrid watched the scene with an icy demeanor. Candice’s complexion flushed with anger. She struggled to control her breath, refusing to succumb to despair.

All at once, Milton’s gaze caught a red mark on her throat, left by the necklace. A trickle of blood oozed, and it was unmistakable.
“You’re bleeding,” he said, instinctively reaching out to check if she was seriously injured.
Candice swerved, evading his touch, and retorted coldly, “Spare me your pretense!”
Quickly retracting his hand, Milton understood that he could not waver. He had chosen the path of ruthless severance, and he must not let his emotions betray him.
Candice extended her wrist, showing the exquisite emerald jade bracelet that gleamed with a value beyond measure.
She shook the bracelet gently and remarked, “As for this bracelet, I’ll have it. I’ve wearied of this endless game. Consider it a parting gift.” With that, she smiled sardonically, a tinge of sorrow in her expression.
