Chapter 31:
It pressed on my lungs until I could barely breathe, almost choking me.
I gagged miserably, while tears splashed onto the back of my hand.
Ethan seemed to understand something. He looked at his collar, regret and alarm flashing across his face. He went still, his hand suspended in the air before he slowly lowered it.
“I’ll change,” he said, then hurried into the bathroom.
I kept retching for several more minutes, my stomach already empty, nothing coming up except tears.
I wiped my mouth clean and listened to the water running in the bathroom while something cold and heavy slowly sank into my chest.

I knew that, with the Alpha pride carved so deep into Ethan, he probably would not cross that very last line with Ivy before properly ending our bond.
But that didn’t matter anymore.
The lipstick stain on his collar was real, the nights he spent with her were real too, and his heart now belonged to another woman.
I didn’t want to hear another explanation from him. Nothing he said could change the fact that, in the end, he would still choose Ivy.
Ten minutes later, Ethan stepped out of the shower in a fresh black silk robe.
The thick perfume was gone, replaced by the crisp scent of shower gel.
He came toward the bed, about to speak, but I cut in before he could.
“Ethan, there’s something I need to tell you,” I said, my voice rough, keeping my head lowered. “Once we’re done tomorrow, I want to resign.”
A suffocating silence swallowed the room.
Everything went still, and I could feel the weight of Ethan’s presence growing heavier and heavier.
After a long silence, he frowned and asked coldly, “Resign? And what exactly are you planning to do after that?”
“You gave me a huge amount of money, didn’t you?” I said, forcing out a bleak smile. “With money like that, I wouldn’t have to work again for the rest of my life. I want to see the world, or maybe settle somewhere quiet and rest. Either way, I don’t want to stay at Voss Group anymore.”
A disbelieving laugh slipped from Ethan, and something incredulous flickered in his eyes.
He knew me far too well.
He knew how much of myself I had poured into the Sparkle collection. In his eyes, I was not the kind of woman who would trade her dreams for money.
“I don’t agree,” he said in a cold refusal. “Not unless you tell me what you’re really after. Lianne, have you forgotten what you promised my grandfather? Do you want him worrying about you from a hospital bed?”
He was using Harold again. Every time I tried to break free, he dragged family into it and tied me down all over again.
