Chapter 306:
“The safety backup measures in these high-yield projects have obviously been reduced.” I threw the document onto the table and fixed the person in charge with a cold stare. “You want to boost profits by cutting corners? Fine. But if anything goes wrong, your company will take full legal liability and cover every bit of compensation. Do you dare sign this supplemental agreement?”
My blunt words made the person shrink back, panic and embarrassment washing over his face before he stiffly agreed to amend the terms.
I worked until evening, pressing a hand to my aching neck. Dust clung all over me as I stepped into the restroom to freshen up quickly before going back to the hotel to pick up Ruby.
The moment I entered one of the stalls, I heard two female coworkers whispering outside.
“Hey, did you hear? Lianne has already married and even has a child.”
“Seriously? I’ve never once seen her mate. She’s probably just some rich man’s secret lover. Otherwise, how could she have gotten promoted this fast?”
“Exactly! She never brings her mate to any company gathering and always acts so aloof. I bet most of her skills are used in bed…”
Their sharp laughter echoed in the air.
Inside the stall, I listened to their vicious words with composure.

By now, I had heard enough rumors like these to grow numb to them.
I calmly straightened my clothes, then walked over and rapped on the stall door.
“Who’s that? Someone’s in here!”
“It’s me, Lianne.”
Lianne’s POV:
A suffocating stillness dropped over the restroom.
The sound of sudden, shaky breaths came clearly from inside the stalls. They had obviously never imagined that the person they were tearing apart with such foul gossip was standing right outside, hearing every disgusting word.
After ten seconds of dead silence, the stall doors slowly swung open.
The two women who came out were accountants assigned to the construction site project. They were always courteous when they saw me, but now, both kept their heads lowered, too frightened to even breathe too loudly.
“Go on, then. Tell me whose mistress I am supposed to be.” I folded my arms and leaned against the sink, my voice cold.
The two of them shot each other uneasy looks and stumbled over their words before one finally forced herself to speak. “Ms. Riley, w-we only heard it from other people. We weren’t trying to target you…”
A mocking laugh slipped from my lips, and my eyes cut across their faces like a blade. “If you only heard it from someone else, then bring the person who started it here and let them say it to my face. If you can’t do that, then these rumors came from the two of you, and I am fully entitled to ask HR to end your contracts today.”
The color drained from their faces at once, and both of them began apologizing.
I was not actually interested in pushing them into a corner, but if rumors like this were not crushed early, they would spread like an infection and eventually affect Ruby.
I had already endured more than enough because of gossip before.
Since they apologized, I shifted my tone and asked sharply, “Who else has been talking about me like that? Who started this?”
