Chapter 898:
Tracy must have sensed the hesitation in my silence because she quickly asked, “Hold on. Didn’t you just tell me everything was fine between you two? What’s actually happening?”
I couldn’t tell her the truth. I lowered my voice and gave her a vague explanation instead. “I’m just afraid that after he’s had more time to think, he’ll change his mind and decide he doesn’t want me anymore.”
“Don’t worry about that.” Tracy sounded completely confident. “I know Ethan well enough. No matter how stubborn he acts, he’s always the one who gives in eventually. You’re thinking too much about this. Rola’s death hit him incredibly hard, that’s all. Once he gets through the grief, he’ll come back to you.”
I didn’t know how to respond, so I simply held the phone against my ear and remained silent.
Then Tracy’s tone suddenly became playful. “But even if you two did break up, it wouldn’t necessarily be the end of the world. Frank has been waiting for you all this time, hasn’t he? That man is practically the definition of a hopeless romantic. If you went to him, he’d take you back without a second thought. And you know he’d treat you right.”
My entire body stiffened. “Tracy, don’t tell Frank about what’s happening between Ethan and me.” Panic crept into my voice despite my attempt to suppress it. “I used Frank before because I was angry. I wanted to provoke Ethan, and I made the mistake of dragging Frank into it. I’ve already taken up far too much of Frank’s time. I can’t keep holding him back.”
Tracy released a heavy sigh. “You’re always thinking about everyone else before yourself. You know how Frank feels about you, don’t you? He even ended things with Jane because of you. And now he’s going abroad for treatment. Before he leaves, he specifically asked me how you were doing.”
A bitter ache spread through my chest. I lowered my eyes. “That’s precisely why he can’t know.” My voice was quiet. “He needs to forget about me and start living his own life.”
Tracy sounded genuinely sorry for him. “Poor Frank. He’s loved you so faithfully, but he’ll probably never get the chance to be with you. Maybe the only hope would be another lifetime. Perhaps fate would be kinder to him then and bring you to him…”
I didn’t have the strength to listen to her romantic speculation. All I wanted was for everyone to stop mentioning me whenever they were around Frank. He needed to move on. He deserved a life that didn’t revolve around waiting for someone he could never have.
When the call finally ended, an empty ache settled inside my chest. I wanted to cry, yet my eyes remained stubbornly dry.

None of this felt real. I’d even pinched myself earlier just to make sure I wasn’t trapped inside some horrible dream. Even now, I still couldn’t accept that Ethan had actually looked at me and told me he wanted to end our relationship.
