Chapter 938:
For several seconds, I remained where I was without saying a word. Then I pushed open the restaurant door and walked outside without looking back.
The afternoon sun was painfully bright, making my eyes sting as soon as I stepped onto the sidewalk. I stood there clutching the suspicious vial in my hand, my thoughts tangled in complete confusion.
By the time I returned home, I felt utterly drained and numb.
I moved through the apartment mechanically, tidying the living room, cleaning the dishes, wiping down the refrigerator, and doing the laundry.
I kept finding things to clean and chores to repeat, as though staying constantly occupied could keep the frustration and panic inside me from surfacing. But no amount of scrubbing could silence Melisa’s words. “You won’t be attending our mating ceremony.” The sentence kept replaying inside my head, over and over, like a sharp thorn lodged in my heart. Once I had finished cleaning the entire apartment, I changed and left early to pick up the children from school.
I got there much sooner than necessary and spent a full hour waiting along the roadside near the school entrance. Other parents gathered around, chatting and laughing as they waited for their children. I stayed by myself at a distance, feeling like I didn’t belong among them.
Eventually, Ruby and Silas came out of the school.
The moment Ruby spotted me, her face lit up. She hurried toward me and wrapped her arms around me affectionately. “Mommy! Why did you come so early to pick us up today?”
Lianne’s POV:
I lowered myself and wrapped my arms around Ruby. I was about to respond when I saw Silas nearby, looking around, he was clearly searching for Ethan. When he failed to spot him, the excitement in his expression faded. After a moment, he finally asked, “Mom, isn’t Dad coming today?”
The frustration written across his face made something inside me ache.

I decided there was no point softening the truth. “Silas, I don’t think your dad is going to visit you two anymore.”
The children went completely still. Ruby looked up at me, her little features clouded with hurt and bewilderment.
“Why? Doesn’t Daddy love us anymore?”
Silas remained quiet. His mouth tightened as he lowered his gaze, fingers curling firmly around the strap of his schoolbag.
Ruby reached for my phone without asking. She unlocked it with practiced ease and immediately called Ethan. By the time I realized what she was doing, the connection had already gone through.
Her voice trembled with tears as she spoke. “Daddy, do you not want Silas and me anymore?”
Ethan answered from the other side, his usually soothing voice carrying a hint of panic. “Ruby, how could you think that? Of course I want you. You and Silas mean everything to me.”
“Then why did Mom say you’re not coming to see us again?”
The line went quiet. I inhaled slowly before taking the phone from Ruby. Moving several steps away, I got straight to the matter weighing on me. “Ethan, is it true that you’re going to seal your bond with Melisa?”
He fell silent.
