Chapter 653:
Another message from Noah came through. “Lianne, I snapped this picture without him knowing. Please act like you never saw it. Alpha can’t stand being seen in such a weak state. He’s been sick for some days now, probably because his old injuries still haven’t fully healed. Then he stayed up all night working on an urgent project, and his body finally gave out. You can call him in about two hours. He should be awake by then.”
I remained frozen, staring at the screen as a mix of emotions ran through me.
Ethan had always been a workaholic, pushing himself as if work mattered more than anything else.
I quickly replied, “Thank you.” After that, I found myself opening the photo again, my fingertips unconsciously tracing the outline of his pale face on the screen.
The sight of his fragility stirred something painful in my chest.
Back when we were together, I used to think he was a gift from the Moon Goddess. Everything had seemed too good to be true, like a beautiful dream that could end the moment I opened my eyes.
Now my worst fear had come true — we were over, and he’d ended up in the hospital.
Things didn’t go smoothly when I arrived at the office to complete the administrative procedures.
The staff looked through my paperwork with obvious contempt before coldly informing me that I didn’t have the authorization required to access the company’s confidential files.
I spent the entire afternoon trying to negotiate with them, but nothing changed. By the time I finally noticed how late it had gotten and realized I would be late for dinner with Frank, I left the office feeling completely drained.

Seated inside my car, I took a deep breath, then finally gathered enough courage to call the number I knew by heart.
Since the day we separated, this was the first time I had reached out to Ethan.
The phone rang twice before the call abruptly cut off.
A second later, a brief message popped up on my screen. “Sorry, I’m tied up.”
I stared at it in confusion before messaging Noah to ask what was happening. He replied immediately, “Alpha just woke up and is sitting by the window.”
So Ethan was avoiding me on purpose.
Refusing to give up, I bit down on my lip and dialed his number again.
This time, the call cut off the instant it rang, as if he couldn’t wait to decline it.
A message followed shortly after. “Can’t talk right now. If it’s important, send a text.”
Every word felt distant and indifferent, like a solid barrier keeping me completely outside his world.
I felt a crushing sense of frustration and disappointment.
I was worried about him. I only wanted to hear his voice. But he wouldn’t even allow me that much.
“Never mind,” I replied simply, then slipped my phone back into my bag.
Once I was back at Voss Group, I forced myself to push those thoughts aside and focus on finishing the remaining paperwork.
I even made a silent promise to myself that if Ethan contacted me later, I wouldn’t spare him a single moment of my attention.
The elevator doors slid open, and I felt that familiar feeling of being watched.
I lifted my eyes and found Zoe staring at me from the other end of the hall.
