Chapter 406:
That was not a superior addressing a subordinate. It felt like he was marking his territory.
By doing this, he showed everyone that I had a strong link to him.
“Lianne… y-you really know Mr. Voss?” Alex stammered beside me, looking completely shell-shocked. “The way he looked at you just now, seriously, it felt like he wanted to pin you down and kiss you right there.”
“I don’t know him. Maybe we’ve only met once before.” I avoided his eyes as I lied clumsily, panic making my thoughts scatter. Grabbing my bag, I forced myself to speak calmly. “I’ll head upstairs first. Stop overthinking it.”
Then, before Alex could ask anything else, I practically escaped from the waiting room.
But the cruelest part was that even after staying away from Voss Group for so many years, I still knew the way to Ethan’s office by muscle memory perfectly.
I moved through the building almost on instinct, the fastest elevator, the quietest hallways, every turn engraved into my muscle memory as though I had never truly left this place.
Yet with every step forward, the urge to turn around and run only grew stronger. When the elevator doors slid open onto the CEO’s floor, that heavy mahogany door came into view once again.
My feet instantly felt rooted to the floor. For one reckless second, I genuinely considered pressing the button and escaping downstairs before anyone noticed.
“Miss Riley?” A familiar voice suddenly pulled me out of my thoughts.
I looked up to see Noah approaching with a stack of documents in his arms.

At that moment, he felt like my only lifeline. Without hesitation, I grabbed his arm and dragged him toward a quieter corner before lowering my voice anxiously. “Noah, tell me honestly. Did you tell Ethan about what happened back then? About the time I took care of him when he was drunk? Is that why he’s targeting me now?”
“I swear, I didn’t tell him anything.” Noah immediately raised one hand like he was surrendering, his expression innocent enough, but the look of knowing resignation in his eyes told another story. “The acquisition of Nexith Group was Mr. Voss’s personal decision. Even I was blindsided by it. Miss Riley, these past three years, his temper has become… truly hard to figure out.”
“Hard to figure out?” I was trembling with anger. “He’s being irrational and completely impossible! What exactly is he trying to do? Did he seriously buy an entire company just to trap me here and make my life miserable?”
I took a shaky breath, trying desperately to reason with him. “Noah, please help me.”
My voice softened despite myself. “You know better than anyone that I used to be his mate. Now he already has someone new. He’s even living with her.” Just saying those words made my chest tighten painfully. “If I stay at Voss Group, things will only become awkward for everyone. It’s unfair to his current mate too.”
