Chapter 818:
Finally, I broke the quiet. “Ethan… am I becoming a burden to you? Every time Melisa or my treatment comes up, you avoid the conversation. I don’t want to keep making guesses. If something is wrong, or if you’re carrying too much, please tell me honestly.”
His fingers tightened around the steering wheel. He smiled faintly and said, “You’re thinking too much. If staying home is giving you time to imagine the worst, why not pick up that international project you paused? Keeping yourself busy will help more than dwelling on it.”
I thought it over before giving a small nod.
Returning to work might actually let me shoulder some of his responsibilities instead of living like something too delicate to be touched.
That night, only a soft bedside lamp illuminated the bedroom.
Fresh from my shower, my hair still damp and carrying the clean scent of soap, I quietly moved closer to Ethan.
My fingers caught the tie of his robe, and after gathering every bit of courage I had, I finally voiced the thought that had been lingering in my heart.

“Ethan… do you think we should have another baby?” Hope quietly colored my words.
Normally, he would have wrapped me in his embrace before I even finished speaking. He had always regretted missing the births of Ruby and Silas.
His reply came immediately, but it wasn’t what I was expecting.
“No. You haven’t fully recovered. We can talk about it another time.” His firm tone left no room for discussion.
Disappointment spread through me in an instant. Feeling wounded and unable to argue, I simply turned away, presenting him with my back before closing my eyes. In the darkness, I silently nursed the childish hurt I couldn’t put into words.
When morning arrived, his side of the bed had already gone cold.
A prepared breakfast waited on the bedside table beside a handwritten note. Don’t forget breakfast. I’ve already sent the project files to your email.
Later, I called Noah to discuss stepping back into the project. Silence lingered for a few seconds before he finally spoke. “Lianne… there’s something you should know. The Voss Group account you shut down back then was quietly restored by Alpha a long time ago. Your access level stayed exactly the same. Every permission remained untouched. Even all the settings you preferred were preserved. He’s not the type to boast about what he does, but I hope you see it. And I hope you cherish him for it.”
After ending the call, I felt warmth slowly spread through my chest, carrying a hint of sadness.
Without my knowledge, he had been protecting my future all along. He never sought praise or gratitude. He had simply cleared every obstacle from my path.
Lianne’s POV
I signed into the company account I hadn’t touched in months, expecting to dig through the files. Instead, I found every project meticulously organized. There wasn’t the slightest trace of the disaster Ethan had described the day before.
The truth hit me almost immediately. He had never actually been counting on me to rescue the project. This had only been a way to occupy my mind, keeping me too busy to dwell on whatever was weighing so heavily on him.
