Chapter 856:
I shook my head. “Putting her in prison won’t help us right now. She has the only antidote. She’s not worried about being held accountable because she knows she holds the greatest leverage over me. Sending her to prison would be easy, but what happens to Lianne afterward?”
Jeremy’s brows drew together tightly. He paced back and forth for a moment before suddenly stopping. His expression was complicated but firm as he looked at me. “Ethan, have you thought about the plan I suggested before?”
My heart sank. I already knew what he was going to say.
“Pretend to pull away from Lianne and get close to Melisa,” Jeremy said slowly, placing weight on every word. “Earn Melisa’s trust. Make her lower her defenses. Then use that chance to completely neutralize the poison in Lianne’s body. Set her free from this nightmare once and for all. If you keep dragging this out, Lianne might cough up blood every time the toxin flares. You can afford to wait, but her body can’t. What if—”
Jeremy’s voice trailed off.
I fell into silence.

I understood everything he was saying. When Lianne’s life was on the line, pride and emotions were meaningless.
But whenever I thought about Lianne’s clear, trusting eyes, about how she had finally put aside her doubts and chosen to believe in me, my heart ached. She had once held my hand inside the car and asked me to promise that we would always be honest with each other. The memory alone made it hard for me to catch my breath.
If I pretended to betray her, I would be destroying the fragile trust we had worked so hard to build.
Lianne was sensitive and smart. How could she not notice something was wrong?
And when the truth eventually came out, what would she think of me? Would she feel as though I had trampled on the trust she gave me and ultimately let her down?
“Ethan, I know what’s going through your mind,” Jeremy said in a low, sincere tone. “You’re afraid she won’t be able to accept what you’ve done afterward. You’re afraid she’ll feel betrayed. But think about this: if she doesn’t survive, what meaning will all that trust and honesty have?”
I closed my eyes and drew in a deep, shaky breath.
I knew Jeremy’s words were reasonable. But what scared me most was imagining the day when everything was finally over and the truth came out. Lianne had always loved with her whole heart. What if she couldn’t forgive me?
She might understand that I had lied because I wanted to protect her. But could she accept the fact that I had deliberately grown close to another woman in order to save her?
Faced with such an impossible decision, I remained frozen in place. I couldn’t choose. No matter how much time passed, I still couldn’t bring myself to make a decision.
