Chapter 896:
Anna’s voice echoed in my mind, soothing me. “Lianne, relax. Ethan is just upset now. He’ll come to his senses.”
But when Ethan finally raised his eyes and looked directly at me, there wasn’t a trace of warmth in them.
My heart shattered on the spot, descending into complete turmoil.
Then he finally spoke. Quiet, but final. And with each word, the hope I’d been clinging to slipped further away.
“I’ve made my decision.” He paused briefly before continuing, his voice soft yet sharp enough to slice straight through me. “Lianne, let’s break up.”
Break up?
The moment those words left his mouth, my first instinct wasn’t grief. It was a ridiculous, almost hysterical urge to laugh.
Years ago, I had walked away from everything we had. And now, the roles had reversed. He was the one casting me aside.
When I really thought about it, we hadn’t even completed the mate bond again. We weren’t officially bound. A connection held together by nothing but two children was, in truth, flimsy.
I swallowed the storm churning inside me and pushed out the words in a strained whisper. “Ethan, I need to understand why. Is it because of Rola’s death? Did it truly change everything between us?”

He didn’t respond. Instead, he looked away.
I refused to let him slip out of the question. I held his gaze and asked the one thing that had haunted me through endless sleepless nights. “If that’s not the case, then is it about Melisa?”
Again, he wouldn’t meet my eyes. His voice remained hollow. “She has nothing to do with this.”
“Then what is it?” My voice cracked. “You owe me an explanation.”
He was quiet. So quiet that I started to wonder if he’d chosen to leave me hanging forever.
At last, he spoke, his voice rough and drained of all emotion. “I’m exhausted, Lianne. I don’t want to keep being hurt by this relationship anymore.”
In that moment, every promise he’d ever made, every time he’d sworn I was the only woman he’d ever love, shattered into meaninglessness.
He had actually reached the point of telling me that our love brought him nothing but pain.
My chest twisted violently. A crushing wave of disappointment washed over me, breaking what little composure I had left. Desperate and wounded, I struck back with the only weapon I had. “Fine! Let’s break up! But if you dare bond with Melisa, I’ll bond with someone else immediately. Frank is still waiting. Do you really think I wouldn’t go to him?”
Ethan’s face turned to ice.
He looked straight at me, his voice cutting and resolute. “If Frank is what you truly want, I won’t stand in your way.”
I froze.
I had never imagined that even throwing Frank in his face would fail to stir the slightest reaction.
He gave me one final look, then turned and walked away. His back was straight, his steps unwavering. He moved forward without a moment’s hesitation, his retreating figure radiating nothing but cold finality.
