Chapter 544:
Eventually, he gave a cold snort. The tension in his eyes eased slightly as he leaned back against the seat, silently signaling that he had agreed to let me come along.
The car moved steadily through the night streets. I drew in a deep breath, took out my phone, and called Frank.
“Hello, Frank.”
“Lianne.” Frank’s voice came through the speaker, as gentle as ever. However, beneath that familiar warmth was a hint of fatigue he couldn’t completely conceal. “I’ve packed everything already. It’s waiting by the door.”
“We’re on our way now and should get there in about ten minutes.” As I spoke, I glanced at the man sitting beside me.
Ethan was watching me without blinking. His gaze was so intense it felt as though he could reach through the phone and tear Frank apart.
A brief silence followed. When Frank spoke again, his tone stayed calm, but there was clear intent behind his question. “Who’s with you?”
“Ethan,” I answered honestly.
The moment those words left my mouth, the air in the car froze.
Ethan lifted his chin, carrying himself like a king defending his domain. Even though Frank was on the other end of the call, he still displayed his possessiveness.
After I ended the call, silence settled over the car. The atmosphere was heavy.

Several times, I opened my mouth to say something and ease the tension, but every word died in my throat when I caught sight of Ethan’s stiff profile.
Just as we were about to arrive, Ethan finally spoke. His voice was low and rough. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep myself under control. He’s looked after our children all these years, so I won’t make things difficult for him.”
I let out a sigh of relief. Carefully, I reached for his hand. “Actually, if you could try seeing him as a friend…”
Before I could finish speaking, Ethan turned his face away. His expression immediately turned cold.
I understood that was as much as he could tolerate.
Expecting an Alpha to become friends with the man who had spent four years caring for his wife and children?
To someone like Ethan, that would be far worse than death.
Ethan’s POV:
The car rolled to a stop, but I remained seated for a moment, turning to look at Lianne beside me. She had been unusually quiet throughout the drive.
Her lips were sealed in a taut line, shielding her thoughts behind an inscrutable mask.
Suppressing the unease stirring inside me, I got out and retrieved a heavy paper bag from the trunk.
Inside were the gifts I had prepared for Frank: a villa in the city center, two luxury vehicles, and documents transferring a substantial portion of shares from my technology company.
This was my way of repaying Frank.
Among werewolves, debts of gratitude were sacred. Kindness had to be repaid, and wrongs had to be avenged.
Frank had protected my mate and raised my children for nearly four years. That debt was immeasurable. I owed him more than words could express.
