Chapter 297

Chapter 297:
So, after countless sleepless nights, I had made the decision to send Silas overseas. There, he would be protected by the best security and cared for by trained professionals.
The only time I could see him was in secret, during business trips or short breaks.
Ruby, on the other hand, looked more like me, which gave me some comfort.
But now, even Alex had begun to see how much Ruby looked like Ethan, and more people were bound to notice it, too.
I tightened my grip on my phone, my fingertips turning cold as a heavy sense of dread settled deeper in my chest.
Lianne’s POV:
I stood at the window, looking at Ruby, who was asleep, and I had already reached a decision.
The moment this resort project was completed, I would submit a transfer request at once or simply resign.
The pay and title the Nexith Group offered were certainly tempting, but none of it was worth more than my child’s safety.

The sea breeze carried a coolness through the night. Worried that I might wake Ruby, I did not dare open the window, so I slipped into my slippers and went downstairs to get some air in the lobby instead.
The air in the town held a trace of earthy freshness, yet it still could not lift the crushing heaviness in my chest.
The moment I stepped into the hotel lobby, the receptionist called out to me and handed me a delicate paper bag along with a wrinkled bill.
“A gentleman left this with me earlier for your daughter. He said he was returning her money.”
I took the paper bag and found it packed with all kinds of expensive candies.
I could not help laughing under my breath, thinking that Ruby was becoming more and more skilled at winning people over. She had even managed to charm a guest staying in one of the luxury suites.
I handed the receptionist one of my business cards and said, “Please give this to that gentleman. I need to pay him back for the candies. I can’t let my child accept things for nothing.”
But the receptionist just smiled and replied, “That gentleman reserved a luxury suite for an entire month. He wouldn’t care about such a tiny amount. Besides, he has already checked out and will be leaving Brinewick by noon tomorrow.”
He was leaving tomorrow?
An odd sense of relief quietly spread through me.
That was for the best.
The following morning, before I even had the chance to have breakfast, I got an urgent call from the construction site.
The man I had dealt with the day before had brought a group of people over to cause trouble at the site.
By the time I got there, dozens of people had already gathered, and every one of them looked aggressive.
The instant I stepped out of the car, the group of broad, heavyset men closed in around me.
“There she is! This bitch pocketed our relocation compensation!” The man from yesterday pointed at me, his face twisted with malice.
